The position

The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat Pakistan is seeking an Environmental Officer who will help ensure the environmental and social compliance of AKAH Pakistan’s interventions. The role includes contributing to tool development, conducting environmental and social assessments, preparing Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), ensuring compliance through monitoring visits, producing compliance reports, and supporting community awareness and engagement. The position will be based in either Thatta or Badin office in rural Sindh.

The role encompasses the following responsibilities:
  • Stay updated on provincial, national, and international environmental standards, and ensure compliance with the requirements of provincial Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs).
  • Conduct environmental and social screening and assessments for a wide range of humanitarian and development interventions.
  • Collect, analyse, and compile environmental data to support assessments and decision-making.
  • Prepare Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) and Checklists ensuring they address all identified risks and mitigation needs.
  • Advise Emergency Management and Built Environment teams to ensure environmental considerations are integrated into design and planning.
  • Monitor the implementation of environmental mitigation measures through regular (bi-monthly) field visits.
  • Ensure environmental and social compliance for all interventions through consistent oversight, coordination, and follow-up.
  • Coordinate responses and mitigation measures in cases of unexpected environmental impacts.
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and high-quality environmental compliance and progress reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate, consult, negotiate, and collaborate with contractors, community groups, partners, stakeholders, and government authorities on environmental compliance matters.
  • Provide environmental compliance awareness sessions and trainings for staff at all levels.
  • Develop training materials, public outreach content, and presentations for communities, government bodies, partner NGOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Visit disaster-affected and environmentally vulnerable communities to promote eco-friendly practices and provide guidance on alternatives to reduce environmental impacts.
  • Work with external stakeholders on major environmental planning and policy initiatives.
  • Support the introduction and promotion of environmental stewardship policies within AKAHP, serving as an internal advocate for environmental issues.
  • Partner with the Communications Department to develop visibility and publication materials for environmental initiatives.
  • Stay updated on emerging environmental legislation, standards, and initiatives at provincial, national and international levels.
  • Manage and coordinate multidisciplinary environmental inputs for DRR and Infrastructure interventions.
  • Supervise and monitor environmental implementation activities wherever required.
  • Actively participate in team planning, discussions, and debriefings to strengthen program coordination.
  • Develop a strong understanding of donor environmental policies and ensure compliance throughout the intervention life cycle.
  • Analyse and communicate environmental requirements to management, ensuring alignment with donor and regulatory expectations.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the reporting authority or senior management to support the environmental objectives of AKAH Pakistan.

The requirements

Qualification and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in environmental sciences, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering or Geography.
  • At least 5 years post qualification professional experience.
  • Experience in the development, implementation and monitoring of environmental management and monitoring plans in accordance with multilateral development organization requirements.
  • Community organizing and related experience, working with hard-to-reach populations.
  • Proven experience in executing environmental management practices for a variety of development projects.
  • An excellent understanding of environmental management systems, including assessments, screening, scoping, planning, public engagement, monitoring, and reporting, as well as relevant environmental legislation and compliance requirements.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Good IT skills (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Strong organization and time management skills; ability to perform several tasks concurrently.
  • Excellent report writing, technical reviewing, and communication skills.
  • Must enjoy working with people and can work well individually on cross-functional teams and in collaborative partnerships with other community agencies and organizations.
  • Habitual in maintaining detailed records and paperwork or electronic correspondence/ data, and meeting deadlines.
  • A willingness to travel frequently, including to remote areas, to monitor project activities.
The position is based in Thatta/ Badin office in rural Sindh.

About the Agency

A new agency, the Aga Khan Agency for the Habitat (AKAH), works to ensure that people live in physical settings that are as safe as possible from the effects of natural disasters, that residents who do live in such high risk areas are able to cope with disasters in terms of preparedness and response, and that these settings provide access to social and financial services that lead to greater opportunities and a better quality of life.
