ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM MANAGER I (SUPERVISORY)

We are seeking a dynamic leader to oversee complex environmental remediation and restoration projects related to the impacts of cannabis cultivation on both public and private lands. This role involves managing technical and administrative teams to ensure science-based, data-driven, and innovative cleanup efforts that align with state laws, including Assembly Bill 2643. The successful candidate will foster collaboration among state agencies, Tribes, and local partners, while leading interdisciplinary work groups and multiagency task forces to restore habitats and protect fish and wildlife. Responsibilities include budget and contract oversight, staff development, operational planning, and communication of program outcomes to a variety of stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity to drive meaningful environmental restoration, influence statewide cannabis policy, and lead high-impact projects that benefit California’s natural resources.

Working Conditions

The position requires the use of a computer for several hours each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings and participation in conference calls. Work may require a uniform.

Minimal travel (less than 5%) is required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include multiple day overnight stay up to seven (7) days dependent upon departmental need. The incumbent shall possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle.

This position will be based in Sacramento or Arcata and is eligible for hybrid telework. Hybrid telework will be dependent on operational needs and this position will be required to report to the designated office at least twice per week.

    1. This role entails setting priorities and guiding the implementation of cannabis remediation and restoration efforts. Describe how you would develop and implement a statewide strategy that ensures technical integrity, aligns with state legislative mandates (e.g., AB 2643), and incorporates adaptive management principles. Include how you would evaluate progress and adjust priorities over time.

    2. Describe how you would respectfully engage California Native American Tribes, ensure confidentiality, and incorporate Tribal perspectives into remediation decisions.
