Job Description and Duties
Join the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and play a crucial role in conserving and enhancing the state's natural resources. As the Program Manager over the parental based tagging and cohort reconstruction program you will lead a multi-disciplinary team in implementing monitoring of salmon using genetics and other techniques to restore California's salmon populations, collaborating with various stakeholders, tribes, and government agencies to achieve our conservation goals.
We are seeking a dynamic individual to provide programmatic-level technical and policy direction to salmon monitoring projects state wide. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in pacific salmon life history, implementation of large scale monitoring programs on the west coast, excel in coordinating across teams, providing consistent guidance, and fostering collaboration to overcome implementation barriers. This role requires expertise in various types of monitoring strategies, statistics, genetics, policy negotiation, and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities include overseeing staff conducting high level genetics, bio-informatics, and statistical analysis, formulating and administering implementation strategies for large scale monitoring efforts, providing technical and policy direction to multi-disciplinary teams, coordinating efforts across teams to ensure consistent policy direction and technical guidance, presenting regulatory options to the Fish and Game Commission, CDFW liaison with other governmental agencies and tribes on salmon monitoring implementation actions, and representing CDFW in complex policy negotiations.
Working Conditions
Primarily office based. Will require sitting or standing at a computer for long periods of time.
Driver’s license required – (CADL or CDL) to operate state vehicles for travel for site assessments meetings, and conferences.
Will require travel, up to 5% including overnight or multi-day travel via driving state owned vehicles and/or commercial air travel for site assessments, meetings, and conferences.
Telework available in compliance with Department policies.
