Then consider the California Department of Water Resources’ South Central Region Office, located in the heart of California.

Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist, Supervisor, the successful candidate will expand their environmental resource expertise by collecting biological and environmental data and researching environmental conditions and sensitive species distributions. The position also involves conducting fieldwork and protocol-level environmental surveys, doing environmental analysis for Department projects, and helping prepare reports on the collected data. The candidate’s primary responsibilities include supporting the operation and maintenance of the State Water Project but will also provide environmental support for other Department projects as needed.

This position will be headquartered at the South Central Region Office in a state-of-the-art building in Fresno with opportunities for telework.

Department of Water Resources (DWR) was established in 1956 by the California State Legislature. We manage California’s water resources, systems, and infrastructure, including the State Water Project, in a responsible sustainable way.

Special Requirements

A diversity of work is part of the job. The ideal candidate must be able to traverse rough and unstable terrain in hot and cold weather conditions and work long hours. This position requires willingness to work outside a typical schedule to participate in meetings and to conduct fieldwork. Occasional travel will be required for up to several consecutive days. The position requires the ability to operate both standard and four-wheel drive vehicles. Candidates must have a valid California driver license. In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with strong oral and written communication skills who can work collaboratively with others in a team environment. The successful candidate will have broad computer skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, have knowledge of or the ability to learn biological field survey techniques, and be able to identify San Joaquin Valley plant and animal species while in the field. Additionally, the candidate may be tasked with assisting with analyzing and organizing field data and drafting and presenting biological reports. Working experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and GPS and GIS software are a plus!
