General Description

The Barry Commoner Center for Health and the Environment (BCCHE), located in mid-Queens, is an environmental and occupational health research institute at Queens College, City University of New York, the nation's largest urban public university. The mission of the Center is to identify and help rectify environmental and occupational threats to human health (http://commonercenter.org/index.html). Areas of current research include air pollution, immigrant and occupational health, lung cancer screening, and World Trade Center 9/11 health effects.

BCCHE is looking for a highly motivated masters’ level environmental scientist or environmental engineer with up to two years of experience in the field. They will work collaboratively with and under the supervision of the project’s Principal Investigator. This exciting position offers the opportunity to participate in the implementation of the New York City Community Air Survey (NYCCAS) – a collaborative ongoing air surveillance program conducted in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to monitor pollution exposures across New York City’s neighborhoods, and new innovative research efforts that are being planned.

Appointment will be for two years, with continuation depending on funding and progress. Other Duties

Tasks will involve the supervision/coordination of laboratory and field work activities of real-time air monitoring networks targeting fine particulate matter and gaseous pollutants in New York City; participation in the design and implementation of various studies; assisting in the determination of data collection methods for research projects, investigations, and surveys; and preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research approaches and findings.

Qualifications

Candidates should have completed their master’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, atmospheric science, exposure science, or related disciplines. We encourage applications from those with experience in laboratory operations, environmental monitoring, exposure assessment, and data science methods for analyzing large volumes of environmental data. Excellent programming and/or mathematical skills, familiarity with SQL, R, or Python, the ability to work in a team while developing his/her own research interests, and experience in grant writing and management of scientific projects are preferred. Candidates will need to be comfortable working on a scaffold at 6ft height and are able to lift 40lbs.
