Environmental Staff Scientist

Position Summary

The Environmental Staff Scientist supports environmental assessment, remediation, and compliance projects across a range of regulatory programs. This position involves field investigations, data analysis, and technical reporting in support of the USEPA Brownfields Program, West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP), WVDEP Tanks Corrective Action (TCA) projects, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews. The Staff Scientist works closely with project managers, regulators, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure regulatory compliance and successful project delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field
  • 0–3 years of relevant environmental experience (fieldwork, internships, or academic research applicable)
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance programs
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or coursework in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field
  • Familiarity with WVDEP and EPA regulatory frameworks
  • Experience with environmental sampling methods and field instrumentation
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience with GIS, data management systems, or environmental databases

Work Environment

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry field equipment (up to approximately 40 pounds)
  • Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods

Pay: $37,500.00 - $65,000.00 per year
