POSITION PURPOSE: South Dakota Mines is seeking an Equipment and Instrumentation Technician for the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. This is a full-time, benefited position. This position provides support with laboratory equipment and instrumentation infrastructure, including setup, maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and modifications to new and existing items. In addition, the technician provides support to undergraduate and graduate student laboratory classes and projects; assists with student organizations; supports funded research projects; and is responsible for the set up and maintenance of department computing assets, including process of requisitions. A successful candidate will be self-motivated, interested in learning and troubleshooting; a team player, hands on and creative; and have the ability to solve complicated issues that arise from instrumentation and equipment set-up, use and maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • welding technology and a variety of welders;
  • machining tools such as grinders, drills, milling machines, turning lathes;
  • mechanical principles involving tolerance, stress, strain, friction, and vibration;
  • methods and practices of fabrication;
  • applicable laboratory tools;
  • set-up and maintenance of analytical instrumentation within department;
  • on the job safety practices and procedures.


Ability to:
  • use welding tools and techniques;
  • operate and maintain electronic and mechanical instruments;
  • use machining equipment and methods;
  • read blueprints and visualize them in three dimensions;
  • prepare designs and drawings;
  • review and comprehend technical handbooks;
  • operate combination vehicles such as trailers;
  • establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers, customers, and vendors.
