Job Description

The Equipment Mechanic will perform troubleshooting and diagnosis, required repairs and/or overhauls on powered and non-powered vehicles/equipment, and other motorized or non-motorized equipment. Inspects SARAA fleet vehicles in compliance with Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Safety and Emissions Inspection regulations for operation on public roadways on behalf of SARAA.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform work independently from supervision while conforming to departmental standards and policies.
  • Respond to emergency airport operations pertaining to equipment failure, equipment operation or crisis situations.
  • Must supply ample personal hand tools needed for mechanical repair duties. (Special tooling to be determined and supplied by the company).
  • Must possess and demonstrate knowledge of heavy truck, diesel engines, construction equipment, heavy truck and automotive electronic controls, general hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Uses electronic and mechanical test equipment for diagnosing vehicles and equipment to determine malfunction or preventative maintenance requirements.
  • Able to read schematic diagrams and troubleshoot in-depth hydraulic and electronic systems.
  • Prepare work estimate for repairs as required.
  • Plans work procedures for overall efficiency of workflow.
  • Interacts with vendors (when needed) for technical support and/or parts acquisition.
  • Repairs or replaces items such as engines; component parts; electrical system wiring/components; fuel system components; braking system components; tires and wheel assemblies; and hydraulic system components. Repairs or replaces accessories such as, but not limited to lights, radios, air conditioning, heaters, mirrors and windshield wipers etc.
  • Fabricates or repairs miscellaneous metal components using basic welding methods (MIG or GAS) equipment and cutting devices such as torch, and plasma cutting equipment in conjunction with sawing apparatus.
  • Performs State Certified Vehicle Safety Inspections (including brake certification) and State Certified Vehicle Emissions Inspection of vehicles for access to public roadways, issues proper documents and certificates (stickers) and maintains official log.
  • Makes recommendations to Manager for training opportunities, as it applies to the position, to foster personal growth within department and company, and the availability to attend training.
  • Perform duties or assignments as assigned by proper authority.


SUPERVISION:

The Equipment Mechanic can temporarily assume responsibility for the shop area, when requested, and in the absence of Department Manager and Lead Technician.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must possess at least 3 years of related experience, and/or training or equivalent combination of experience and training, with both automotive gas and/or heavy truck diesel equipment.
  • Must be able to successfully pass FAA required training.
  • Must possess experience in automotive and heavy truck electronics and hydraulics.


Required Licenses, Certificates, Conditions:

  • Valid Pennsylvania state driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Possess Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class-A certification, or the ability to obtain and retain a CDL-A License for vehicles operated and requiring State Safety Inspection (May obtain within 6 months after employment and must maintain while employed).
  • Possess a Category III brake certification for inspecting or repairing heavy truck (over 17,000 lb.) brake systems.
  • Ability to pass a 10-year background and criminal investigation to be issued an Airport Identification Badge.
  • Valid Commonwealth of PA State Safety Inspection License (Class S-7 min.) and PA State Emission Inspector License.
  • Certificate from Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) or obtain the certification and certificate within 30 days of hire date.
  • Preferred to have one ASE Certification related discipline to position and progressively acquire and maintain additional certifications.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance; stoop, kneel, sit, smell, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat and cold, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


Language and Communication Skills:

  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in the English language.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers and administrative management.
  • Regularly communicates with manager, supervisors, co-workers, FAA tower operators, other internal departments, contractors and consultants.
  • Uses tower and maintenance 2-way radio, and telephone communication equipment, requiring correct terminology and ability to speak clearly and concisely.


Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


Computer Skills:

  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Windows operating system including the use of Microsoft Office Suite including but not limited to: MS Word and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Basic skill and familiarity with PA Emission Inspection Reporting software and operations.
  • Basic skill and familiarity with PA Safety Inspection Reporting software and operations.
  • Operate desktop and iPad devices as it pertains to electronic work orders, service manuals, researching parts and procedures, and instruction/training videos.
