Position Information


TxDOT's Sanderson Maintenance Office is looking for a Equipment Mechanic II or III to join the team. The main duties of this position are mechanic-related, but there are opportunities to learn and assist the crew with roadway maintenance tasks as needed. Equipment Mechanic II (A18): $3,793.41 - $5,921.25 monthly

Equipment Mechanic III (A20): $4,263.17 - $6,779.25 monthly


Minimum Salary: 45,521.00 Maximum Salary: 81,351.00

Position Description


Performs advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties for Equipment Mechanic II/III Include:

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking
    lights.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to
    these activities.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and preforms complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Preforms other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Equipment Mechanic II - 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Equipment Mechanic III - 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Competencies for Equipment Mechanic II:

  • Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance


  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Automatic and manual shift transmission repair
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use


  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade


  • Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems


  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Crawling-moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

  • Required to work during emergency situations after hours, on weekends or holidays.
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
