Looking for a stable job with weekends off and generous vacation time? Join our team at Chatham County Public Works as an Equipment Operator II in Solid Waste Management, where you'll operate medium-weight motorized equipment and enjoy benefits like annual salary increases, 12 vacation days, and 12 paid holidays per year. If you hold a Commercial Driver's License and have experience operating motorized equipment, apply to become a valuable member of our team.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates light to medium weight trucks or other light to medium weight motorized equipment in maintenance, construction, or sanitation work activities.
  • Operates a trash compactor daily and supervises a small crew assigned to the compactor that removes yard waste and bulky items from the right-of-way.
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required, including during times of emergency.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • At least two (2) years' experience operating motorized equipment of medium weight, or one (1) year experience operating the primary equipment of the position; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Georgia Safety Council Flagger's License within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must provide and wear approved steel toe protective footwear.


During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.


In accordance with the Department of Transportation, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and those employed in safety-sensitive positions are subject to random drug testing.


Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the minimum salary that is posted, reflecting their exceptional qualifications.
