Job Summary
The Estimation Engineer (Steel Fabrication) is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, material take-offs, and pricing for structural steel fabrication and erection projects, ensuring competitive and profitable bids while complying with project specifications and standards.
Detailed Job Responsibilities Tendering & Cost Estimation
- Study tender documents, drawings, BOQs, and specifications related to structural steel projects
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for fabrication, surface treatment, and erection works
- Develop rate analysis for steel fabrication, welding, blasting, painting, and installation activities
- Prepare budget estimates and tender summaries for management approval
Quantity Take-Off & BOQ Preparation
- Perform accurate quantity take-offs from IFC / tender drawings and Tekla models
- Prepare BOQs, material summaries, and weight calculations
- Coordinate with Tekla / drafting team for quantities and drawing clarifications
Material Costing & Vendor Coordination
- Identify material specifications and grades (plates, pipes, beams, bolts, paints, consumables)
- Request and analyze supplier and subcontractor quotations
- Evaluate vendors based on price, delivery, and compliance
- Maintain updated material cost databases and vendor records
Fabrication & Erection Costing
- Estimate manpower, machinery, consumables, and production hours
- Calculate fabrication productivity norms and erection cost parameters
- Coordinate with production and project teams for realistic costing assumptions
- Account for logistics, transportation, cranes, and lifting equipment
- Risk & Commercial Analysis
- Identify project risks and include contingencies and allowances
Tender Submission & Support
- Prepare final tender documents, pricing sheets, and submission formats
- Support technical and commercial negotiations
- Assist management during post-tender clarifications and revisions
Post-Award & Cost Control Support
- Support project teams with budget handover and cost breakdowns
- Assist in variation pricing and change order evaluations
- Monitor project cost data for future estimation reference
Technical Knowledge & Standards
- Structural steel fabrication processes
- Welding processes and productivity
- Surface preparation & painting systems
- Familiar with ISO, ASTM, AWS, BS, and project specifications
- Understanding of WPS, PQR, and fabrication drawings
- Prepare commercial clarifications and exclusions
- Analyze tender risks related to design complexity, schedule, and execution
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Civil / Structural Engineering
- 4–8 years experience in steel fabrication & structural steel estimation
- Strong expertise in quantity take-off and cost estimation
- Experience with Tekla, AutoCAD, Excel
- Good knowledge of UAE / GCC market rates
- Strong analytical and commercial skills
- UAE / GCC experience preferred
