We are seeking a highly skilled Estimation Engineer with proven experience in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and traffic signal control projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, analyzing project requirements, and supporting bids and proposals for transportation and roadway infrastructure projects.
This role requires strong technical knowledge of traffic signal systems, ITS components, construction methods, and relevant standards, along with excellent analytical and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for ITS and traffic signal control projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs
- Review project plans, specifications, bid documents, and RFPs to determine scope and pricing requirements
- Perform quantity take-offs for traffic signals, detection systems, communications, cabinets, controllers, fiber optic networks, CCTV, VMS, and related ITS components
- Analyze historical data, vendor quotes, and market trends to develop competitive and accurate estimates
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to validate assumptions and pricing
- Identify potential risks, cost drivers, and value-engineering opportunities
- Assist in the preparation of bid proposals, technical clarifications, and cost breakdowns
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal transportation standards (DOT, MUTCD, NEMA, etc.)
- Support post-bid reviews and handoff to project execution teams
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3–8+ years of estimation experience in ITS, traffic signal control, or transportation infrastructure projects
- Strong knowledge of:
- Traffic signal systems and controllers
- ITS devices (CCTV, VMS, detection systems, communications networks)
- Conduit, cabling, fiber optics, and field equipment installation
- Experience estimating projects for DOT, municipalities, and public agencies
- Proficiency in estimation software and tools (e.g., Excel, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar)
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design-build or design-bid-build transportation projects
- Familiarity with state and local DOT bid processes
- Knowledge of traffic management centers (TMC) and system integration
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification (preferred but not required)
- Experience working with subcontractors and suppliers in the ITS industry
