There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

With approximately 1.17 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct One’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 33 percent African American, 38 percent Latino, 21 percent Anglo, 6 percent Asian and 2 percent other or multiple races. Precinct One stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precinct’s territory includes a large section of Downtown Houston, including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park and the BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park Complex and the renowned Texas Medical Center. The Precinct is also the higher educational home to Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston and the University of St. Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 21 parks, 10 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers and several area offices, all of which provide an array of services to Precinct One residents.

What you will do at Precinct One:
Event Assistant is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing a wide range of events on behalf of the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis. This role requires a highly organized and detail-oriented professional with experience in political, corporate, and nonprofit event management. The ideal candidate will be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining strong relationships with community stakeholders, vendors, and internal teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Event Planning Support: Assist in creating and maintaining event timelines, goals, and objectives in alignment with the direction of the Events Coordinator/Planner. Support the development of event themes, concepts, and branding. Official events including town halls, press conferences, ribbon cuttings, and special initiatives Participate in walkthroughs and pre-event site assessments.
  • Logistics and Vendor Coordination: Coordinate pre-event logistics, including vendor communication and planning meetings. Assist with logistics for events including venue selection, catering, audiovisual needs, transportation, and on-site coordination. Track and help manage event-related contracts, service agreements, and delivery schedules. Liaise with vendors to ensure timely arrival, setup, and compliance with event requirements. Collaborate with internal departments to ensure alignment with the Commissioner’s priorities and messaging. Track and help manage event-related contracts, service agreements, and delivery schedules.   • Budget and Inventory Management: Track event expenses and assist in managing event budgets under the direction of the Events Coordinator/Planner. Maintain inventory of event materials, promotional items, and supplies. Utilize the LMIS (Logistics Management Information System) to process inventory tracking, equipment logs, and work orders.
  • On-Site Event Execution: Support physical setup and takedown of decorations, tables, signage, and other event components. Provide on-site logistical support and problem-solving during events. Greet and assist guests, volunteers, vendors, and staff as needed. Document event activities and assist with post-event follow-up tasks such as evaluations and acknowledgments.
  • Oversee vendor selection, contract management, and budget tracking
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education:
  • High School diploma or GED
Experience:
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of proven experience in event coordination
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience working in government related events, corporate events, and nonprofit organizations
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Proven track record of event coordination
Licensure:
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's license

Hours:
  • Full-time | Regular
  • Monday - Friday | Evenings and weekend will be required at times.
Work Environment:
  • This position includes standard office work which may require remaining stationery and working at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Will generally perform duties in an office, though sometimes at external event locations
  • Occasional travel within Harris County
