Position Description

DEFINITION:
Provide instruction, in class and online, to students who seek training in the area(s) of building/facility/apartment/property maintenance, focusing on Certification of Apartment Maintenance Technician preparation (CAMT) at New Hanover Correctional.

**This is a Temporary Full Time Instructor position that expires July 31, 2027**

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Receives general supervision from Director of Special Programs
  • Exercises no supervision.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:
  • Provide classroom and online instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities
  • Develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance lessons
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade record individual scores
  • Prepare students for industry recognized credentials and assessments
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various technology; develop assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance
  • Maintain and submit all required paperwork in a neat, accurate and timely fashion, including but not limited to: attendance forms, grade reports
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area and in accordance with CFCC policies and guidelines
Other Important Functions:
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons and recommend improvements as needed
  • Oversee and participate in field studies and assignments
  • Provide guest speakers or field experts when appropriate
  • Stay aware of new developments with the exams and preparation
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
  • General construction, basic carpentry, plumbing, hvac, electrical and repair concepts
  • Facility and property maintenance
  • General trades knowledge as it relates to property/apartment maintenance
  • A variety of educational methods
Ability To:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Communicate concisely & respectfully, both orally and in writing.
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:
  • HS Diploma
  • Relevant professional experience
Minimum Experience:
  • Work experience as a maintenance technician or as a carpenter, HVAC technician, plumber or electrician
  • Teaching or experience training others
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Degree in construction or related field.
  • CAMT credential

Special Instructions to Applicants:

  • Instruction will occur at prison.

  • Class is scheduled M-F 730am-3pm

  • This position REQUIRES UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND/OR TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS be submitted in addition to the application. Please have these documents ready to upload when applying.

  • Successful candidates who are offered a position are required to submit their OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS for all degrees earned prior to their first day of employment. If highest level of education is a High School Diploma or equivalent, proof of completion is required.

  • Successful candidates who have obtained their education outside of the United States and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.

  • To claim veterans’ preference, all eligible persons shall submit a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to Human Resources during the application process. Human Resources will verify eligibility.
