Job Summary:
The Hospital Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial statements, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with internal controls and healthcare financial regulations. The ideal candidate will also have proven experience in internal or external auditing, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting and assisting with audit preparedness and execution.
Key Responsibilities: Accounting & Financial Reporting:
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in compliance with GAAP and healthcare financial regulations.
- Manage general ledger entries, account reconciliations, and journal postings.
- Maintain records of accounts payable and receivable, patient billing, insurance claims, and payroll.
- Monitor and manage hospital budgets, expenditures, and cost allocations.
- Ensure timely month-end and year-end closings.
Audit & Compliance:
- Support internal and external audit processes, including documentation, data provision, and audit query resolution.
- Conduct internal audits to evaluate the effectiveness of financial controls and compliance with hospital policies and health regulations.
- Identify discrepancies and recommend corrective actions for financial and operational weaknesses.
- Assist in preparing audit reports and working papers.
- Ensure compliance with local tax laws, healthcare regulations, and hospital financial policies.
Budgeting & Financial Planning:
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and forecasts in collaboration with department heads.
- Track budget performance and report variances with recommendations for corrective action.
- Contribute to financial planning, cost control initiatives, and resource optimization.
Systems & Processes:
- Use hospital financial management systems (e.g., SAP, QuickBooks, or specialized hospital ERP systems) for data entry, analysis, and reporting.
- Recommend and implement improvements in financial processes and systems.
- Maintain documentation of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA/CA/ACCA preferred).
- Minimum 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a hospital or healthcare environment.
- At least 1–2 years of audit experience (internal or external audit).
- Proficient in accounting software and MS Excel.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
Preferred Skills & Attributes:
- Experience with healthcare ERP systems (e.g., Meditech, Epic, Oracle Health).
- Understanding of IFRS or local GAAP, and healthcare-specific financial standards.
- Strong communication skills to liaise with auditors, department heads, and external agencies.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
