MITRE is seeking an ambitious and motivated researcher to join MITRE’s Quantum Moonshot Project team. The candidate should have extensive knowledge and experience in quantum optics and cryo-optical measurement. In this role, you will apply your technical experience in quantum physics to develop and test novel spin-photon interfaces, chip-based quantum photonic circuits, and quantum optical measurement systems. You will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with team members at our partner institutions (MIT, University of Colorado, and Sandia National Lab) to integrate generation, control, and measurement of photonic or matter quantum bits for the development of a photonic universal quantum computer. This position offers opportunities to work on a wide range of problems in quantum science and technology, impact research directions, and collaborate with internal and external teams possessing a broad range of expertise and skills to publish results.

The ideal candidate must possess a PhD degree in physics, applied physics or related discipline and have great interest in fundamental research, physics, and engineering. Required skills for this role include familiarity with quantum optics including solid state single photon sources and quantum memories, electromagnetic waves, photonics, atomic physics, and previous hands-on experience in an optical laboratory setting. The candidate must be willing to work primarily on site.

Key Functions:

  • Develop new research ideas into experiment and prototyping in the field of quantum information science (QIS)
  • Publish and present research findings in academic journals and conferences
  • Collaborate with teammates in developing photonics-based quantum technology
  • Assist with the planning, development and execution of improving lab capabilities
  • Collaborate with external partners on QIS research

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
