What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Process and Sampling Technician 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

You will work with the Radiation Protection Services (RP-SVS) External Dosimetry Program to provide radiation dosimetry monitoring services to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) workers and visitors. Each year, the External Dosimetry program provides comprehensive external dosimetry services to over 12,000 individuals in support of the Laboratory's nuclear security, environmental monitoring, and research missions. The program ensures accurate, timely, and technically sound results in accordance with quality, technical, and regulatory requirements. As a member of the External Dosimetry team, you will interact with program staff members, Health Physicists, Radiological Control Technicians, and LANL dosimetry customers. Candidates must be able to effectively manage multiple tasks and changing priorities in a team environment. External Dosimetry Program staff must be responsive to customer needs while maintaining quality services.

Process and Sampling Technician 1, $48,500 - $75,000
External Dosimetry Technicians assist in assembly, disassembly, issue, and delivery of dosimetry badges; assisting customers in enrolling in dosimetry services; use of software applications to issue dosimeters; operating dosimeter processing equipment; and delivery of dosimeters to custodians.

Process and Sampling Technician 2, $53,700 - $82,500
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will assist with resolving problems with dosimetry enrollments, reviewing dosimetry assembly lists, maintaining equipment under supervision of program staff; and processing of dosimeter components to obtain dosimetry results.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and/or electronics principles.
  • Basis knowledge and experience related to mathematical problem solving.
  • Basic knowledge in operating a variety of testing and/or inspection equipment relating to the measurement of dimensions, density, optics, radiation and/or nuclear material accountability.
  • Skilled in the use of MS Windows based computer systems and common applications (e.g., Windows, Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner.
  • Must have a valid Drivers License.
  • Applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance, which usually requires US Citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Technician 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Knowledge and experience related to mathematical problem solving.
  • Experience or training in dosimetry techniques and instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability in problem solving.
  • Skill in the preparation and presentation of test-measurement results.
  • Skill with frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical and/or mechanical assembly instructions, drawings, bill-of materials, and other related specifications.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory related policies, practices, and procedures including use of proper personal protection equipment to mitigate exposure hazards.
  • Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Education/Experience at lower level: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education/Experience at higher level: This position requires a High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years related experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in external radiation dosimetry.
  • Experience in instrument operations, maintenance, and/or calibration.

Work Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 -Clearance: L or Q or Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.ires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
