FACILITIES ASSISTANT

This position is responsible for a wide variety of general maintenance and repair work of the District’s grounds and facilities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are “typical” tasks included in the principal functions of the job. The list is not exhaustive and does not include miscellaneous, incidental or additional duties that may be assigned by the District as needed and are consistent with applicable laws. The Facilities Assistant must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains grounds, to include mowing, weeding, watering/fertilizing lawns; planting/pruning trees, shrubs, plants and flowers.
  • Inspects grounds and facilities to determine need for repairs, maintenance and/or pest control. Applies fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides and/or pesticides and ensures the control of pests and insects inside and around facilities.
  • Cleans all roofs, gutters, drains, and drain lines.
  • Cleans and maintains all retention ponds.
  • Picks up, delivers, and disposes of furniture, appliances, apparatus, vehicles, and other equipment as needed.
  • Picks up and delivers mail among facilities.
  • Cleans, scrubs and/or pressure washes exteriors of all facilities and equipment.
  • Maintains all parking surfaces, sidewalks and curbing.
  • Performs custodial work such as vacuuming, shampooing, sweeping, moping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing and buffing floor surfaces; may clean restrooms, and wash windows, mirrors and light fixtures.
  • Changes interior and exterior light bulbs.
  • Changes filters and assists in maintenance of HVAC equipment.
  • Perform exterior and interior preparation and painting of all facilities as assigned.
  • Replaces safety signs.
  • Sets up and takes down chairs, tables, other furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
  • Enters work projects and purchase orders into a database.
  • May assist the Facilities Maintenance Technician with maintenance or repairs of facilities.
  • Appears for scheduled work with regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes.

QUALIFICATIONS


  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) is required.
  • One (1) year of full-time paid experience in facilities and/or grounds maintenance is required. Must be 18 years of age to apply.
  • Word processing and spreadsheet software experience is desired.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s license. May be required to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Prior to appointment, the successful candidate must submit to and pass a background check.

Knowledge of:


  • Materials, methods, techniques, equipment and tools commonly used in facilities and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Lawn care practices and proper methods of transplanting and protecting trees, shrubs, plants and flowers.
  • Occupational hazards and safety standards associated with this type of work.
  • Basic chemicals and safe procedures used in fertilization, weed and pest control.
  • Computerized database, email, and word processing software.


Work is performed under the direction of the Facilities Manager/Division Chief and receives assignments and instructions from the manager or lead worker. All positions within Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue are expected to adhere to the established Core Covenants and Code of Ethics of the District.
