Job Description
City of Chesapeake – Public Works Department, Facility Maintenance Division

We’re currently seeking a full-time Facility Maintenance Technician I to join our dynamic Facility Maintenance Division. This is your opportunity to make a real impact—helping to maintain and improve the structural integrity and safety of the city buildings that serve our community every day.

What You’ll Be Doing:
As a key member of our team, you’ll be responsible for a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, working directly to support the function and appearance of city facilities—from minor renovations to routine upkeep.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing structural maintenance and repair work, including light construction.
  • Locksmith services, including installation, repair, and replacement of locks and door hardware.
  • Sheetrock and drywall installation, finishing, and repair.
  • Trim carpentry, including installation and repair of baseboards, crown molding, and other finish work.
  • Flooring repair and installation for a variety of surfaces.
  • Door and window repair, adjustment, and replacement.
  • Repairing shingle and built-up roofing systems.
  • Completing small-scale structural modifications during building renovations.
  • Overseeing and inspecting work performed by contractors to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Maintaining detailed records and managing material purchases for assigned projects.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
