Faculty Position – In-Residence
Endowed Professorship in Biocomputing, Visualization, and Informatics
Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
School of Pharmacy
University of California, San Francisco
Position Description
The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) invites applications for a faculty member to lead the team that develops ChimeraX and to build an independent and collaborative research lab focused on the analysis and visualization of biological structures. The existing team members consist of highly experienced and talented staff with excellent interdisciplinary knowledge and specialized, state-of-the-art expertise in software engineering, computer visualization, and data science.
As a faculty member, the applicant is expected to develop a strong, grant-funded research program. Faculty members also are expected to participate in one or more of UCSF’s 15 PhD programs in basic and biomedical sciences, including teaching courses offered by these programs and mentoring students. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to teach in other programs in the School of Pharmacy, including the MS degree program in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Drug Discovery and Development and the Pharm.D. program.
The successful candidate must also demonstrate a record of accomplishment in developing visualization and analysis methods in support of structural biology, network biology, bioinformatics or a closely related field. Of particular interest are candidates with knowledge and expertise in developing software for visualizing molecular structures and their complexes, particularly in the context of cryo-electron microscopy or tomography. The position includes directorship of the UCSF Resource for Biocomputing, Visualization and Informatics (RBVI) and an appointment in the In-Residence series with an endowed professorship.
The RBVI and its precursor, the UCSF Computer Graphics Laboratory, has a 56-year history developing cutting-edge interactive software tools that can be applied to diverse types of biomolecular data, including atomic-resolution coordinates, 3D density maps and light microscopy data, and protein and nucleic acid sequences, annotations, and networks. These areas are critical for addressing important biomedical problems related to health care and disease treatment and prevention. The Resource focuses on the unmet software needs for basic and applied biomedical research.
The RBVI has maintained continuous NIH funding since its inception, and the exceptionally collaborative research environment at UCSF provides multiple opportunities for projects that combine complementary expertise in software tool development and discovery science research.
Salary/rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and training. UCSF seeks candidates who are committed to the mentorship of students and promoting excellence across the campus.
