OVERVIEW:
Established family law practice in La Plata, Maryland is seeking an experienced, highly organized Legal Secretary to support a fast-paced domestic litigation practice. This role requires strong attention to detail, comfort with high-conflict client matters, and the ability to manage deadlines independently.
This is not a general administrative role—prior family law or litigation experience is strongly preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare, format, and file pleadings using Maryland MDEC e-filing system
- Maintain attorney calendars including court dates, deadlines, and hearings
- Draft routine family law documents (motions, notices, correspondence, scheduling orders)
- Manage client intake and ongoing client communication
- Organize discovery documents, financial records, and case files
- Coordinate hearings, mediations, and trial preparation materials
- Maintain strict confidentiality in sensitive domestic matters
- Support attorney with daily docket management and deadline tracking
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2+ years experience in a law firm (family law or litigation strongly preferred)
- Familiarity with Maryland court filing procedures (MDEC experience highly preferred)
- Strong written communication and proofreading skills
- Ability to manage multiple urgent deadlines simultaneously
- Professional demeanor with emotionally distressed clients
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and case management systems
- Reliable, punctual, and highly organized
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior family law experience (custody, divorce, support cases)
- Experience preparing trial notebooks and exhibits
- Knowledge of Maryland Rules of Civil Procedure
- Prior work with solo or small firm litigation practice
COMPENSATION:
- $45,000– $65,000 annually (based on experience)
