Position Summary

The Fashion Design Teacher provides instruction in apparel design, textiles, garment construction, visual presentation, and fashion industry fundamentals. The teacher will develop students’ creativity, technical skills, and understanding of the fashion field while promoting college- and career-readiness. This position includes maintaining a safe, organized classroom/workroom environment and guiding students through hands-on, project-based learning experiences.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive curriculum in fashion design, including:
    • Design principles, color theory, illustration, and portfolio development
    • Sewing techniques, pattern making, draping, and garment construction
    • Fabric science, sustainability, and textile care
    • Fashion history, merchandising, and current industry trends
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for students with diverse abilities and interests.
  • Provide hands-on instruction with sewing machines, cutting tools, and other fashion-design equipment.
  • Integrate technology such as digital drawing tools, design software, and online fashion platforms.
  • Manage classroom materials, equipment, and supplies, including inventory and safety protocols.
  • Guide students in project-based assessments, including fashion shows, design portfolios, and competitions.
  • Collaborate with staff, counselors, and administrators to support student scheduling, career pathways, and industry certifications (if applicable).
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and documentation in accordance with district policies.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians about student progress.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and implement appropriate instructional accommodations or modifications.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current in fashion industry practices and educational methodologies.
  • Support school activities, open house events, and community/industry partnerships.


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, Apparel & Textiles, Family & Consumer Sciences, or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Family & Consumer Sciences, Fashion Design, or appropriate CTE area (or ability to obtain certification).

Demonstrated proficiency in sewing, patternmaking, garment construction, and fashion illustration.
