Job Responsibilities





The Responsibilities of the FIA Forester:


Records forest inventory and health monitoring data on forest inventory plots with a degree of accuracy as required by the U.S. Forest Service- Southern Research Station- Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit.
  • Works on a two-person forestry crew locating forest inventory plots and records inventory and health monitoring data at a minimum production rate with the degree of accuracy required by the U.S. Forest Service- Southern Research Station- Forest Inventory and Analysis Unit.
  • Assist in determining ownership and obtaining permission from owner to enter property where plots are located. Digitally transmit completed data to U.S. Forest Service.
  • Attends training sessions related to the Forest Inventory and Analysis program, Forester I position and other required or voluntary South Carolina Forestry Commission training.
  • Participates in activities and/or projects in support of agency's mission and performs other duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A bachelor's or master's degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited program or an earned degree at the baccalaureate, master's or doctorate level in forestry or related natural resources field that meets the SAF Certified Forester educational requirements. (Examples of "related natural resources" include, but are not limited to, environmental studies, wildlife management, range management, or ecology. The earned degree(s) must have a total of 56 semester credit hours with 51 semester credits as specified in the SAF forestry-related coursework areas (a through d) and an additional 5 credit hours in any of the forestry-related coursework areas.   • Must successfully pass the U.S. Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis certification test within the first year of employment.
  • Required to become a SC registered forester within two (2) years of appointment.
  • A criminal background check and drug and alcohol test is required.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.

Additional Comments

  • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions and navigating difficult terrain.
  • This position works a Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm schedule.Occasional overnight travel required.
  • This position's duty station is in Spartanburg County.
  • Working knowledge of current forestry management techniques and practices. Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.
  • This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential. Position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion, rehabilitation monitoring, and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace- Drug and Alcohol Testing.
