This fieldwork opportunity is designed to provide relevant experience for an MLIS student interested in academic librarianship, preferably in a research, teaching, and learning public area. 10-15 hours per week.
Most of the work will focus on helping the RTL department review tracked questions and answers received at the Library Services Desk. The purpose is to review the responses from students, staff and librarians and code for accuracy, identify specific training needs and items to be added to an FAQ repository. The data is to be pulled from LibraryH3lp Chat transcripts and SpringShare’s platform.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position includes working in some or all the following areas:
  • Utilizing the LibraryH3lp chat transcripts and SpringShare platform to review and analyze transactions recorded from the Library Services Desk.
    • Review and clean up the data.
    • Code for the data for:
      • Type of questions (e.g., reference, directional, printing, etc.)
      • Accuracy of the response to the question
    • Identify areas for training improvement (e.g., how to answer and categorize questions for library staff and students; utilize the information to identify potential tutorials).
    • Identify specific questions for use in the Library’s FAQ.
  • Opportunities to serve at the Library Services Desk.
    • Provide research assistance via chat, email, phone, and in-person.
    • Develop skills related to answering questions from various patrons at an academic library.
  • Observe library information literacy sessions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
MLIS student (Master’s degree in progress)

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
Basic course work in Library and Information Science, including information literacy, information retrieval and research.
Understanding of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
Experience with the SpringShare platform
