Finance & Budget Analyst II

The Academic Affairs Budget Team provides strategic resource management for the Division of Academic Affairs at UNC Charlotte. The division consists of eight colleges and multiple academic support units, including the Graduate School, Enrollment Management, Undergraduate Education, Libraries, and others. The annual operating budget for the division is approximately $450 million per year out of a total university budget of $950 million. The Academic Budget Team collectively provides support and guidance to college and unit leadership and business and administrative support staff.

Primary Purpose of Position
This division-level position serves as an integral member of a three-person team dedicated to the strategic budget and resource management of the Division of Academic Affairs. Operating at the center of the university’s largest division, this role provides the critical financial stewardship and collaborative support necessary to manage a complex divisional portfolio.
By managing essential financial transactions and overseeing reconciliation processes, this role ensures the division’s financial accuracy and sustainability. Additionally, this position leads specialized projects and strategic initiatives unique to academic affairs, helping to align financial resources with the university’s core mission.

Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Finance and Budget Analyst II performs a range of financial and accounting-related duties in support of the Division of Academic Affairs:
  • Financial Monitoring and Reconciliation: Performs monthly financial reconciliations and monitors fiscal activity to ensure accuracy and divisional fiscal stability. This role applies professional knowledge in budget and resource management to identify trends and maintain financial integrity.
  • Budget Planning and Resource Management: Supports resource management for the division by managing various financial transactions and assisting with long-term budget planning. This position utilizes analytical skills to ensure effective operations and resolve complex fiscal issues while maintaining alignment with institutional standards and state guidelines.
  • Business Partnership: Builds and maintains effective working relationships as a consultative partner to division colleges, academic support units, and various university-wide administrative offices to achieve the division’s mission.
  • Collaboration and Team Continuity: Operates as an integral member of the three-person budget team to ensure operational continuity. This includes collaborating on division-wide fiscal tasks and serving as a backup on core team functions to maintain a unified approach to stewardship.
  • Strategic Projects: Leads projects and initiatives unique to academic affairs that align financial resources with academic goals to support the broader divisional mission.

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree and four years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or a related discipline
  • Professional experience in higher education and/or public sector
  • Experience working in a large division at an executive level
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in working with various data management and financial tools, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Applications (Excel), Google Suite (Sheets), Enterprise Systems such as Banner/PeopleSoft that include a broad suite of tools to support institution-wide business functions (finance, hr, purchasing, travel, etc.)
  • General knowledge with preparing and importing data into a reporting tool (e.g., Tableau and Smartsheet) and creating dashboards for divisional financial analysis
