The Finance Intern will assist the Finance team in a variety of capacities, including farebox receipts and cash handling, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, and financial reporting. This is a part-time paid internship that works under the general supervision of the Assistant Finance Director.
Assist with processing farebox receipts and performing basic cash-handling activities in accordance with internal controls.
Process and file accounts payable invoices, scan and retain documentation for ACH payments and manual checks, and enter lease and Subscription-Based Information Technology Arrangement (SBITA) transactions into DebtBook software.
Create, organize, maintain, and archive vendor files by fiscal year, including relocating historical records to designated storage vaults.
Locate, upload, and prepare documentation requested by auditors to support audit and compliance requirements in an accurate and timely manner.
Assist with preparing schedules and documentation supporting the general ledger; contribute to financial reports; and perform data entry, reconciliations, and basic financial analysis.
Support the Finance team with projects and administrative tasks.
Collaborate with Finance staff on various assignments and perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

The exertion level required for this position is generally considered light work. Physical requirements include stooping, bending, standing, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, and reaching above shoulders. While performing the duties of this job, employees are often required to sit, with regular periods of walking and standing; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; use vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
The work environment involves exposure to conditions generally found in an office setting within a shared workspace. The noise level is quiet to moderate. There are frequent interruptions to this position’s workflow with moderate to heavy foot traffic. There is an expectation to hold and attend meetings on a regular basis. This position is predominantly located in one office building, but the position will sometimes require an employee to visit other locations to conduct essential functions, including Illinois Terminal, Administrative Office Building, Maintenance Garage, or other off-site locations. Occasionally, the employee may need to work outdoors in inclement weather.
The Finance Intern should expect to work between 5-20 hours per week. Hours can be flexible within the hours of 9:00 am – 6:00 pm weekdays.
Internship is not an IMRF-qualifying position since under 1,000 work hours are expected in total on an annual basis.
The internship is temporary during the summer, working up to 20 hours per week as needed and desired. Extending the internship during the 2026-27 school year or next summer may be offered based on need and performance.
