Overview
This position is under the direction of a Senior Finance Manager, YSM Central Research Cores. Responsible for the financial reporting and analysis of a comprehensive portfolio of Internal Service Providers (ISP) and sponsored projects. YSM Central Research Cores include 18 ISPs with annual operating budget of $30M and $2M in sponsored projects funding. Central Research Cores include Center for Celular and Molecular Imaging, Keck Biotechnology Research Laboratory, Flow Cytometry, CyTOF, YSM Stockroom, YSM Electronics and Machine Fabrication Shop, Yale Center for Molecular Discovery , Human Embryonic Stem Cell Core, Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy, YSM Biobank, Yale Biomedical Informatics & Computing (YBIC), and Lipidomics Innovation. Responsible for ensuring timeliness and high-level of accuracy of all financial deliverables (monthly and quarterly reporting, variance analysis and forecasting, budgeting, financial review checklists, budget, transactions approvals, year-end, and ad-hoc analysis), space management, ISP billing and usage analysis, ISP rate calculations, customer services, as well as compliance of all financial transactions within university and contractual guidelines. Prepares complex financial modeling to determine financial stability of existing practices, develops and establishes ISP rates, budgets and estimates, updates and develops policies and procedures, improves internal controls and monthly review practices. Provides exceptional client satisfaction support by cultivating strong relationships with key stake holders including Core Directors, YSM Controller’s Office, Office of Sponsored Projects, faculty and researchers. This person will have considerable latitude for exercising independent judgement and will be responsible for various budgeting, spending, reporting and planning activities within YSM Central Research Cores, in compliance with Yale University and funding agency guidelines. Ad hoc analysis as requested.
Required Skills and Abilities
1. Well-developed analytic, organizational and communication skills, combined with the ability to be flexible and multitask. Strong attention to detail and task prioritization. Exceptional problem-solving and data mining and extraction competence.
2. Thorough working knowledge of accounting principles and practices. Exceptional financial analysis skills and decision-making abilities.
3. Ability to function independently, under stress and in a highly proactive fashion. Demonstrates willingness to work as a member of a team, absorbing incidental responsibilities and contributing to special projects to ensure the smooth functioning of the office.
4. Ability to be an expert representative of financial management and the business office in an academic medical setting. Broad, institutional thinker with a thorough understanding of institutional economic models and financial processes.
5. Strong computer skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Analytical mindset with previous reporting experience. Proficiency in spreadsheets and database query tools, as well as other MS products, including MS Teams and demonstrates high personal integrity. Excellent interpersonal as well as strong written and verbal communications and presentation skills.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
1. MBA or other professional degree (MHA, MPA) preferred.
2. Familiarity with Yale Workday financial applications, Yale Budget Tool, IRES PD, PPMS, Power-BI.
3. Familiarity with Yale policies and financial reporting guidelines. Solid knowledge of accounting, financial reporting and analysis, experience preparing budgets, and forecasts.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Financial Modeling and Forecasting. Provides technical analysis to determine present and future financial performance. Organizes information from a variety of sources for use in analyzing future plans and forecasts. Collaborates with all levels of management, both internally and externally, to gather, analyze, summarize, prepare, and present recommendations regarding financial plans and other complex financial matters. Researches and evaluates information to resolve issues and makes recommendations. Develops and/or executes complex financial models. 2. Financial Analysis and Reporting. Analyzes and synthesizes information and designs and creates accurate and timely reports. Designs financial reporting to meet the compliance needs of internal and external users. Extracts and consolidates data from multiple sources. 3. Financial Methods and Systems. Contributes to the planning and improvement of practices, processes and systems. Collaborates with all levels of internal and external contacts to carry out department goals. Provides a high level of service that cultivates and maintains strong working relationships and communicates effectively; takes ownership and accountability for timeliness, accuracy and relationship management. 4. Strategic Resource. Translates department finance goals into objectives. Identifies and raises potential financial opportunities, issues, risks, ideas and solutions. Identifies the appropriate stakeholders to include in consultations, communications, approvals or buy-ins for designing and implementing changes. 5. Compliance and Risk Management. Establishes, implements and/or maintains strong internal controls in areas of assigned responsibility to provide reasonable assurance of effective and appropriate resource use, accurate financial information, and adherence to contractual obligations and agreements, policies, procedures, and external regulatory requirements. 6. Mentors, leads and/or supervises staff. 7. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Economics or Finance and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
