Financial Controller (Hands On)

+About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to take full ownership of our accounting and financial operations in a growing company.

This is a working Controller role—not a purely supervisory position. You will be directly responsible for the accuracy of the books, cash management, payroll, and financial reporting, while partnering with leadership to provide clear financial insight and support decision-making.

You’ll have part-time administrative support for AP entry, but you will own all core financial functions, including reconciliations, close, payroll, and reporting.

If you’re someone who:

  • Takes pride in clean, accurate financials
  • Wants to own the numbers—not just review them
  • Enjoys being both hands-on and strategic

…this is a strong opportunity to build impact without unnecessary layers or bureaucracy.

+What You’ll Do

Own Financial Accuracy & Close

  • Perform all bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Maintain a clean, fully reconciled balance sheet
  • Lead the monthly close process (target: by the 12th day of the month)
  • Ensure books are accurate, organized, and audit-ready at all times

Manage Cash & Financial Health

  • Maintain accurate daily visibility into cash
  • Build and manage a 13-week cash flow forecast
  • Monitor AR/AP trends and proactively manage cash timing

Oversee Payroll (~$3.2M annually)

  • Process and review bi-weekly payroll
  • Ensure accurate job and departmental coding
  • Handle payroll tax filings and compliance
  • Track benefits, 401(k), and payroll-related reconciliations

Deliver Financial Reporting & Insight

  • Prepare monthly financials by the 15th, including:
  • P&L (departmental and consolidated)
  • Balance Sheet
  • Cash Flow
  • Budget vs. Actual
  • Provide clear explanations and actionable insights to leadership

Drive Job Costing & Profitability Insight

  • Ensure accurate cost allocation to jobs
  • Identify margin issues, overruns, and trends
  • Help leadership understand performance by job, department, and service line

Maintain Compliance & Coordinate with CPA

  • Prepare and file payroll (Idaho) and sales taxes (Idaho & Washington)
  • Coordinate with outside CPA for year-end and tax work
  • Ensure W-2s, 1099s, and filings are completed accurately and on time

Improve Processes & Maintain Controls

  • Establish and maintain accounting procedures
  • Ensure part-time A/P Clerk's work is accurate and complete
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency without sacrificing control

+What Success Looks Like

  • Books are clean, accurate, and trusted
  • Month-end is on time and low stress
  • Cash flow is predictable and well managed
  • Leadership receives clear, actionable financial insight
  • Financial issues are identified before they become problems

+Qualifications

Required

  • 7+ years of accounting experience (including hands-on full-cycle accounting)
  • Strong experience with QuickBooks Desktop
  • Proven experience managing month-end close and reconciliations
  • Experience processing payroll and handling payroll compliance
  • Strong understanding of financial statements and cash flow
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of responsibilities

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Experience in service-based, construction, or trades industries
  • Experience in a $10M–$25M company environment
  • CPA or advanced credentials (nice to have, not required)

+Important Notes About This Role

  • This is not a CFO role—you will be hands-on in the details
  • This is not a data-entry role—you will own the financial picture
  • You will not be doing full AP entry (support is provided)
  • You will be fully accountable for the numbers
