Job Title: Financial Counselor

Location: Fort Riley, Kansas

Reports To: Contract Installation Manager (CIM)

Job Summary:

The Financial Counselor is responsible for providing financial planning services to transitioning Service Members and their Family Members at the TAP Center. This role involves conducting workshops and providing one-on-one financial counseling to help Service Members and their families achieve financial readiness before transitioning from the Active Army or Reserve Components. The counselor will offer guidance on a wide range of financial matters, including budgeting, debt management, savings plans, and investment strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Workshops: Provide 4-6-hour financial planning workshops for groups of approximately 50 Soldiers and Family Members as part of mandatory TAP VOW/CRS activities. Workshops will cover topics such as budgeting, debt management, banking, homeownership, healthcare, investing, taxes, and estate planning.
  • Individual Counseling: Conduct one-on-one financial counseling sessions, addressing the specific financial needs of Service Members and their families, including income and expenditure evaluations, and recommendations for short- and long-term financial goals.
  • Financial Guidance: Assist clients in managing complex financial issues such as relocation, asset allocation, transition/retirement planning, eviction, garnishment, and repossession. Coordinate with military and civilian agencies to provide solutions for these challenges.
  • Reporting: Prepare monthly reports detailing financial planning activities, including the number of Soldiers and Family Members who attended workshops and individual sessions.
  • Administrative Support: Assist the CIM with delivering Commander’s reports, notifying clients of their eligibility to begin services, and informing them of missed requirements for VOW/CRS.
  • Compliance and Training: Complete all mandatory Government training, safeguard Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and maintain accurate records according to ARIMS. Upload information into iPERMS (after training). Participate in sustainment training events and other professional development activities.
  • Marketing and Outreach: Participate in marketing activities and employment events as directed by the CIM.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Required: A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university, or a combination of education and experience amounting to 1,000 hours of financial counseling experience.
  • Required: Must possess and maintain a nationally recognized and accredited Financial Counselor certification in accordance with DoDI 1342.22.
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.
  • Experience: Strong experience in financial counseling, with the ability to manage a caseload, conduct both group and individual financial counseling, and generate training materials.
  • Skills: Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to conduct individual budget preparation, schedule and coordinate workshops, and set up classrooms including audiovisual requirements.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with Service Members and their families.
  • Ability to provide financial solutions and guidance across a wide variety of financial topics.
  • Knowledge of military and civilian resources to support clients with complex financial challenges.

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel may be required for workshops and outreach activities. Flexibility in work hours may be necessary to meet client needs, including evenings and weekends.
