FIRE ALARM TECHNICIAN

Installs, tests, and repairs security and fire alarm systems. Consults with client on system requirements; provides system recommendations and cost estimates. Uses blueprints or building plans to determine proper systems to install based on building layout and setting.

Fire Alarm Technician Job Duties

Fire alarm technicians have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

• Installing and maintaining fire alarm systems including smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and other fire suppression equipment
• Inspecting commercial buildings for fire hazards such as blocked exits or malfunctioning equipment
• Responding to fire alarms to determine the source of the fire, whether it be smoke or a malfunctioning system
• Installing and maintaining fire alarm systems in homes and businesses, including checking batteries and smoke detectors weekly
• Responding to emergency calls to assist with firefighting operations and rescue people from burning buildings
• Responding to medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest or trauma events such as vehicle accidents
• Inspecting commercial buildings for code violations related to fire hazards such as blocked exits or malfunctioning equipment
• Maintaining records of fire alarm system activity and other fire safety measures in residential and commercial buildings
• Testing and repairing fire alarm systems and communication systems in commercial buildings

A fire alarm technician typically needs to have the following:

Education: Most fire alarm technicians are required to have a high school diploma or GED. Some fire alarm technicians may choose to pursue a two-year associate’s degree in fire science or fire protection technology. These programs teach students about fire prevention, firefighting and fire safety.

Training & Experience: Fire alarm technicians receive on-the-job training from their employers. This training typically lasts for a few weeks and includes learning the company’s policies and procedures, as well as the fire alarm system’s features and capabilities.

Certifications & Licenses: Some states require fire alarm technicians to obtain a license to work in the field. Fire alarm technicians may also choose to earn certifications to gain additional knowledge about their responsibilities and further their career advancement opportunities.
