Fire Captain

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The Fire Captain oversees daily station operations and emergency response activities in the absence of higher-ranking command staff. This position supervises fire personnel, coordinates the deployment of staff and equipment, and provides leadership during emergency incidents to ensure safe and effective operations. The captain is responsible for maintaining operational readiness, enforcing departmental policies and safety standards, conducting training and performance evaluations, and fostering teamwork, professionalism, and personnel development within the department.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Conducts periodic inspections of personnel, equipment, apparatus, and station quarters to ensure operational readiness, cleanliness, and compliance with departmental standards; schedules and directs routine maintenance, servicing, and housekeeping activities; orders equipment and supplies as needed; and completes all required fire and EMS reports.
  • Oversees daily station operations and emergency response activities in the absence of a ranking officer or when assigned. Assumes incident command responsibilities, supervises fire personnel, and directs fire suppression, rescue, ventilation, salvage, and related emergency operations. Coordinates personnel and equipment deployment, maintains operational readiness, provides tactical direction during incidents, enforces departmental policies and safety procedures, and promotes teamwork, accountability, and discipline within the department.
  • Evaluates the performance of subordinate officers and assigned personnel, assists with personnel-related actions, and maintains personnel and departmental records.
  • Conducts inspections of businesses and fire hydrants to ensure compliance with applicable fire prevention codes and City ordinances; studies technical materials related to equipment operation, fire suppression, and fire prevention to maintain and enhance job knowledge and operational effectiveness.
  • Conducts station tours, public education programs, and fire prevention training within the community to promote fire safety awareness and community engagement. Develops, coordinates, and conducts fire training classes and drills for fire personnel; participates in training exercises to maintain operational readiness and ensure compliance with departmental standards.
  • Performs related duties including participating in physical fitness activities each shift, studying maps and response districts to maintain familiarity with assigned areas, and completing other duties as assigned.
