I. Purpose / Summary:

The purpose of the Fire Captain is to aid in the daily response across Marlboro County. A Fire Captain will support the fire service by initiating or assisting with the incident command structure. These non-exempt, 40-Hour week employees will also strengthen responses by allowing an on-call fire service employee for nights and weekends. These employees will be roving in an assigned vehicle within their designated zones for quick response during scheduled hours.

II. Essential Functions:

· Responds to all types of fires and other emergencies; extinguishes fires and performs related life and property protection.

· Initiate and/or maintain Incident Command for working incidents.

· Ability to make critical decisions by directing emergency scene operations.

· Ability to drive and operate emergency apparatus on and off emergency scenes.

· Ability to knowingly, effectively, and safely use Fire Service equipment. Ex. Fire Pumps, Hoses, Nozzles, Hand Tools, Gas Powered Equipment, Battery Powered Equipment, Ladders, Fans, Extrication Equipment (Gas/Battery), and Specialty Apparatus (Ladder Trucks, Watercraft, Etc.)

· Participates in daily functions of the Fire Service with limited administrative responsibilities. Ex. Communication Checks, General Housekeeping, Incident Response, Record Management, Scheduling for Equipment Maintenance/Testing, etc.

· Participate in Fire Service Programs, such as Pre-Fire Planning and Fire Hydrant Checks.

· Ability to maintain a Customer Service mindset when dealing with or addressing members of the public.

· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

· Ability to pass an annual physical and obtain an OSHA required Fit Test.

· Ability to properly wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

· Assist in managing part-time staff to ensure fire stations and apparatus are covered and in working order.

· Ability to implement and positively reinforce County Gov’t and Fire Service policies and procedures.

· Perform other Fire Service or Management Duties as assigned.

III. Skills / Education:

· High School Diploma or Equivalent

· Valid S.C. Class E Driver’s License or Fire Department Endorsement

· Minimum of 5 Years of Full Time Fire Service Experience

IV. Certifications Required:

· NFPA Firefighter II

· EVDT

· Pump Ops I

· Pump Ops II

· Aerial Ops

· NIMS-ICS for the Fire Service

· ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800

· Hazardous Materials Operations

· Technical Rescuer

· NFPA Fire Instructor I

· NFPA Fire Officer I

V. Preferred Certification:

· BLS Provider (CPR and AED)

· NR-EMT

· Preparation for Initial Company Operations

· Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations

· Decision Making for Initial Company Operations

· Incident Safety Officer

· NFPA Fire Officer II

VI. Supervision:

· Limited supervision over Part-Time Fire Service Employees.

· Assist with managing fireground operations.
