EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Plans, directs, and manages Fire Department operations including training, purchasing, and budgeting to provide effective community service.Develops, presents, and administers the annual department budget to meet operational needs.Pursues alternative funding to offset capital, technology, facility, and operating costs.Oversees fire inspections of existing facilities and coordinates with Community Development to ensure fire code compliance.Recommends construction, acquisition, or remodeling of facilities and apparatus.Commands large-scale emergency incidents and coordinates multi-jurisdictional responses.Assumes command at emergency scenes and directs operations through subordinate officers.Maintains continuous department operations; available 24/7 via various communication methods.Coordinates with County and State agencies on homeland security and emergency response issues.Oversees recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and discipline of all Fire Department personnel in accordance with City and department policies.Promotes community relations through fire prevention, education, and public awareness programs.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration or related field.Experience as a Fire Chief.Suburban background in a mid to large size community. Understanding of metro and suburban issues.Knowledge of: Budget development and
presentation.Fire service technologies.Modern fire department operations and administration.Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and standards. Skills in: Leadership, innovation, and problem solving.Researching and preparing reports and studies.Creating and maintaining effective working relationships.Communicating with the public and elected officials.Using the tools and equipment associated with the work. Ability to: Plan and implement department-wide programs.Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Collaborate with the City Administrator and senior leadership.Respond to emergencies while off duty.Manage workloads, time commitments, and
personnel.De-escalate stressful situations.Develop positive working relationships with staff, residents, volunteers, and professional peers.Supervise, train, motivate, and delegate work while ensuring quality control.Identify problems, evaluate options, and implement effective solutions independently.Conduct research and prepare reports and studies.Exercise initiative, discretion, and independent
judgment.Work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks.Perform duties with minimal supervision.SupervisionDirect supervision of: Deputy Fire Chiefs – 2 Indirectly supervises all other Fire Department staff.Physical RequirementsMust meet the Department’s established firefighter physical testing requirements.Working ConditionsPrimarily indoor work (approximately 90%) with some outdoor exposure (10%), including temperature extremes.Requires evening, non-business hour meetings, and training events.FLSA exempt position. Typical workweek is Monday through Friday; however hours worked may exceed 40 hours per week and may include evenings, weekends and extended hours.
