**Promotional Opportunity****This is an internal recruitment available to currently qualified City of Reno Fire Department Firefighters only.** Position Summary: Operate all fire apparatus and equipment; respond to fires, medical emergencies, and other emergency and non-emergency situations and take appropriate action; perform various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Drive emergency apparatus and other emergency vehicles used in the transport of equipment and personnel in response to fire, rescue, emergency medical, hazardous material and other public service alarms.Respond to fires and other emergency or public assistance incidents in a timely, safe, and skilled manner and participate in the control through hose laying, ladder operation, ventilation, extinguishment, extrication, salvage, and other activities as part of a team effort.Operate pumps and other fire apparatus ensuring that water flows in sufficient quantity and pressure for application at the scene of fires and hazardous material incidents.Ensure apparatus and assigned equipment are response-ready.Inspect, clean, and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus and is responsible for hose and other equipment being replaced on fire apparatus after being cleaned.Report malfunctioning apparatus and other equipment to a maintenance mechanic and supervisor.Maintain inventory and maintenance records of apparatus and equipment and conduct regular inspections to ensure the availability of adequate supplies and proper condition of fire suppression and emergency medical items; test and maintain firefighting and emergency medical equipment, preserving proper condition and suitability for service.Prepare and maintain records, maps, files, and reports.Administer basic and/or intermediate life support and first aid as needed; rescue those in need of aid.Ensure that assigned personnel perform duties and responsibilities in a safe and prudent manner that does not expose them or others to unnecessary harm or risk of on-the-job injury. Supervise activities at the scene of an emergency in the absence of a supervisor.Assist with maintaining the fire station in a clean and orderly condition.Inspect buildings, check fire escapes, exists, electric wiring and connections, and other possible fire hazards to determine compliance with pre-prevention codes and ordinances.Perform related duties as assigned.

Written Examination: Date: May 5, 2026Timed Field Hydraulic Math - 30% of the written examinationTheoretical Math and Multiple Choice - 70% of the written examinationWeight = 40% of final gradeCandidates must pass both parts of the Written Examination to continue in the examination process.The 30 highest-scoring candidates resulting from and passing the Written Examination will progress to the Practical Examination. Tied scores resulting in more than one candidate ranking in the 30th position will be re-ranked according to department seniority. Written Examination Study Materials: All study materials can be located under the FEO Academy folder located on the RFD BLI, labeled “2026 FEO Promotional Exam Study Materials".Practical Examination: The practical examination is tentatively scheduled to take place between May 13, 2026 - May 22, 2026Candidates may be required to attend multiple days of practical testingWeight = 60% of final gradeCandidates must pass each of the practical exercises to obtain a passing final grade for the entire examination process and be eligible for promotion. Candidates should prepare for the practical examination by studying the materials referenced for the written test and be ready to demonstrate proficiency on any apparatus/equipment that may be used for the examination. *An optional in-person candidate orientation will be provided to all candidates on April 28 at 11 a.m. in the Station 15 Conference Room. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The current certification rule in effect at the time a request is received by the Civil Service Commission will be used to refer names. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable. Certification from a Fire Department promotional list is as follows: if the list contains fifteen (15) names or less, the ten (10) highest scoring eligibles; if the list contains more than fifteen (15) names, the eleven (11) highest scoring available eligibles; if the list contains fewer than ten (10) eligibles, all eligible names shall be submitted. If there is more than one vacancy, one (1) additional name shall be submitted for each vacancy.
