Fire Management Officer (EMNRD #5344)

The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters' safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.
Why does the job exist?

This position functions as the district fire management officer. This position requires protection of life, property, and that state natural resources through the planning, coordination, and implementations of wildlife prevention and mitigation programs, wildfire suppression response activities, and prescribed burn programs.
How does it get done?

Supervise and coordinate the training and orientation of new and current firefighters. Plan and implement an annual training program to introduce staff to new techniques and concepts while continuing education of current firefighters. Supervise the maintenance of equipment and vehicles to ensure safety and effectiveness. Participate in the budgeting process for annual expenses and revenue. Participate and provide input to the fire chief for the expenditure of funds and coordinate the procurement of wildland equipment and apparatus. Participate in the policy, procedure and guideline development for fire and medical response to ensure crew safety during response. Provide guidance to other senior leadership related to wildland response and hazard pre-planning. Provide leadership and supervision to field staff to ensure safety and effective response. Prepare pre-incident plans and prepare emergency response procedures for high risk and high hazard risks within the community. Complete hazard mitigation prior to catastrophic events to reduce risk for the community.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in wildland fire science or related natural resource degree and one (1) year supervisory experience and four (4) years of experience in wildland fire or prescribed fire. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must have NWCG qualifications for Crew Boss (CRWB) or other Single Resource and Incident Command Type 4 (ICT4) as specified in PMS 310-1 Incident Commander Type 4 | NWCG and be working toward either Strike Team Leader Crew (STCR) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).
Employment Requirements

Must maintain and possess a current New Mexico Driver's License, Defensive Driving,
must pass a yearly arduous pack test and maintain wildland fire certification.
Working Conditions

Will work in extreme temperatures and hazardous terrain during fire assignments and project work. Will work extended hours to include nights, weekends and holidays. Use of hand tools, chain saws and torches. Work is also performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/video displays, terminals and extensive computer and phone use. Operation of vehicles during emergency response and coordination of resources for emergency response. Must pass a yearly arduous pack test.
