Characteristics of Work
This is advanced technical work involving fire and explosion investigations, fire inspections, fire code enforcement, emergency response, and related law enforcement activities. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in handling investigative cases; analyzes evidence and other information to determine the cause and origin of fires or explosions; prepares investigative reports; enforces state fire codes; and may testify in criminal or civil court as an expert witness.
Examples of Work
Examples of work include responding to fires, explosions, hazardous material incidents, natural or man-made disasters, search and rescue missions, and other emergencies; investigating residential, commercial, industrial, vehicle, marine, and wildland fires; securing and analyzing evidence; determining the probable cause and origin of fires or explosions; obtaining background information on suspects; preparing accurate investigative reports; assisting with suspected arson cases; participating in the execution of search and arrest warrants; testifying in criminal or civil court proceedings; conducting fire inspections of state-owned and state-leased buildings; inspecting fire extinguishers and fire protection equipment; assisting with on-site inspections of homes; providing support to lower-level staff; and performing related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires possession of a State of Mississippi Law Enforcement Professional Certification.
Typically requires 4-6 years of experience in fire prevention, firefighting, criminal investigation, and/or arson investigation.
Essential Functions
Essential functions include conducting advanced fire and explosion investigations; responding to emergencies, disasters, fires, hazardous material incidents, and other public safety events; analyzing evidence and investigative information to determine cause and origin; securing background information and supporting documentation; preparing accurate investigative reports, case records, and correspondence; conducting fire inspections and enforcing applicable state fire codes; inspecting fire protection equipment and related systems; assisting with suspected arson investigations; participating in legal proceedings, including providing expert testimony when required; coordinating with law enforcement agencies, fire departments, public officials, and other emergency response partners; traveling statewide and working after normal business hours as needed; maintaining law enforcement certification and required training; and performing related investigative, inspection, fire prevention, and public safety duties as assigned.

Life Insurance

Flexible Spending Accounts
Many state agencies provide opportunity for employees to participate in pre-tax spending accounts. These accounts allow employees to withhold childcare expenses and unreimbursed medical expenses prior to application of state and federal taxes.
Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave
Full-time employees receive paid time off for personal needs and for sick leave. Leave begins accruing after one month of employment and may be used as it is accrued. Employees earn approximately 18 days of personal leave annually and 12 days of sick leave annually.
Military Leave
In accordance with federal law, all employees serving in the armed forces or the military reserves are entitled to 15 days per year for military training.

Retirement Programs
The State of Mississippi provides all its employees a Defined Benefit/Defined Contribution Retirement Program. Employees become vested in the State’s retirement system after 8 years of employment. The Mississippi State Personnel Board offers several management and administrative certification programs, as well as professional development courses to enhance employee value to the agency. Employees who have completed 6 or more months of service are eligible for promotional opportunities within state government employment. Minimum qualifications must be met.
