About our FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Mount Morris Township Fire Department is a Paid on-call department that responds to a variety of emergencies, including structure fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials incidents. The department is staffed by Paid On-Call firefighters who work together to provide the highest level of service to the community. The department also offers a range of educational programs and services, including fire safety inspections, smoke detector installations, and CPR training. The department is dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for the residents of Mount Morris Township.

What's a (FireFighter/Trainee)

A FireFighter/Trainee is just starting their career in the fire service. They typically haven't completed the required training and education, such as a fire academy, Entry-level firefighters may also be referred to as trainees, and they work under the supervision of more experienced firefighters as they gain on-the-job experience and training.

Duties of Trainee's

- Learning the skills and knowledge required to become a full-fledged firefighter, and completing the required Fire Academy.

- Working under the supervision of experienced firefighters, and following their instructions and guidance during firefighting operations.

- Cleaning and maintaining the firehouse and its grounds, including the quarters, kitchen, and bathrooms.

- Participating in training sessions and drills, and working to develop their firefighting skills and knowledge.

- Maintaining their physical fitness and health, and working to improve their stamina, strength, and endurance.

- Developing strong teamwork and communication skills, and learning to work effectively with other firefighters and emergency personnel.

- Building positive relationships with the community, and participating in community outreach programs and fire safety education programs.

- Demonstrating dedication, commitment, and a willingness to learn and grow as a firefighter.

- Following all safety protocols and procedures, and working to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for themselves and their fellow firefighters.

The Trainee Firefighter performs entry-level firefighting and emergency response duties under the direct supervision of senior personnel. Responsibilities include assisting with fire suppression, medical emergencies, and rescue operations while learning proper techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures. The trainee participates in all required training, drills, and probationary evaluations to develop the skills necessary for certification and active duty.

Additional duties include maintaining station cleanliness, checking and preparing equipment, and supporting overall department operations. The Trainee Firefighter is expected to follow all department policies, maintain physical fitness, demonstrate discipline, and work effectively as part of a team in high-stress, hazardous environments.

Trainee Responsibilities:

  • Completes required Firefighter I & II certifications within designated timeframe
  • Attends all scheduled training sessions and probationary evaluations
  • Demonstrates competency in basic firefighting skills and safety procedures
  • Maintains a high level of physical fitness and discipline
  • Works under close supervision of senior firefighters and officers

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, and other emergency incidents
  • Performs fire suppression activities including hose deployment, ladder operations, ventilation, and overhaul
  • Provides basic and/or advanced life support medical care within scope of certification
  • Operates and maintains firefighting tools, apparatus, and equipment
  • Participates in drills, training exercises, and continuing education programs
  • Conducts station maintenance, cleaning, and equipment readiness checks
  • Assists with fire prevention activities, inspections, and public education programs
  • Works as part of a team under stressful and hazardous conditions
  • Follows department policies, procedures, and chain of command at all times

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity under extreme conditions
  • Lift, carry, and operate heavy equipment (50+ lbs)
  • Work in hazardous environments including heat, smoke, confined spaces, and heights
  • Maintain endurance, strength, and agility required for emergency operations

Work Environment:

  • Fire station and emergency scenes
  • Exposure to fire, smoke, chemicals, and hazardous materials
  • Irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • High-stress, high-risk situations requiring quick decision-making

Pay: $10,000.00 - $20,000.00 per year
