2027 STARTING WAGE: $73,686 annually

• SFFR has had an ISO Class 1 designation since November 2015. This designation is only given to fire departments in the United States that meet the highest standards of response capabilities.

• In 2003, the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) voted to approve accredited status for SFFR. With only 326 accredited agencies protecting 14% of the U.S. population, SFFR is proud to be one of the agencies to hold this honor.

• One of the largest fire departments in the upper Midwest with 243 authorized staffing and 12 fire stations placed strategically throughout the city.

• Paid Training: In the fall of 2023, the City of Sioux Falls opened the doors to its $55-million dollar “state-of-the-art” Public Safety Campus!

Minimum Qualifications

• Firefighters must annually pass the Individual Physical Ability Test (IPAT).

• Graduation from high school or GED certification, or any such combination of education, experience, and training as may be acceptable to the hiring authority.

• Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.

• Applicant must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination, and no greater than 44 years of age at the time of the entrance civil service examination.

• Vision must be correctable to at least 20/40 in each eye.

• Must be a nonsmoker.

• Applicant must pass all phases of the hiring process designated by the Rules of the Civil Service Board.

• Must possess or be able to obtain National Registry or South Dakota Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification within one year of hire.

• Duty assignments that do not require the performance of “Emergency Functions” are not subject to IPAT or NFPA standards in making determination regarding fitness for duty.
