Firefighter

Position Summary

Join a team dedicated to protecting lives and property by responding to fires, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, hazardous materials emergencies, and other public safety needs. Whether you're an experienced firefighter or looking to begin a career in the fire service, we encourage you to apply. No prior firefighter or EMS certifications are required – paid training is provided for qualified candidates who do not currently possess the required certifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to structural, wildland, and vehicle fires — perform fire suppression, confinement, and operate fire apparatus (including aerial devices and pumping equipment)
• Provide emergency medical care as an EMT or Paramedic for accidents and life-threatening situations
• Perform rescue and extrication in vehicle accidents, water rescues, high-angle rescues, confined space rescues, and aircraft incidents
• Respond to and help mitigate hazardous materials incidents
• Conduct fire prevention inspections of businesses and public spaces, and maintain related records
• Operate and maintain Fire Department vehicles and equipment, including basic mechanical repairs and pump testing
• Complete ongoing training to maintain operational readiness and required certifications

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid Missouri driver's license
• Two (2) years of work experience in a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Ability to pass the department's physical agility test and medical examination

Additional Information

• Qualified candidates hired without required certifications will receive department-sponsored training and mentorship to support advancement from Firefighter Recruit to Firefighter. Employees must obtain Firefighter II, EMT, and Hazardous Materials or Rescue Technician certifications within three (3) years of employment and successfully complete all requirements for continued service.
• Required 24-hour on-duty rotations, including emergency call-outs and holdovers as needed
• Must reside within Adair County or within a thirty (30) minute commute from the Kirksville Fire Station as a condition of employment
• Ongoing training and annual physical agility testing required

Hiring Process

• September 18, 2026 – Completed application packets due by 5pm
• September 26, 2026 – Physical Agility Exam (in person at Kirksville Fire Station)
• September 28-29, 2026 - Interviews for all candidates who successfully completed the Physical Agility Exam
