The department does offer volunteer fire suppression personnel a shift stipend as approved by the Board of Directors. Under direct supervision, performs duties similar to the position of Firefighter; assists in all phases of emergency operations including skilled firefighting work in the prevention and suppression of fires, rescue, basic emergency medical care and hazardous materials abatement; performs fire prevention inspections; station and equipment maintenance; and other duties as assigned. Examples of DutiesThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed. Performs full range of fire safety activities, including placing fire hoses, setting ladders, operating fire streams, and other Fire Department equipment, ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims.Conducts and performs rescue, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, and clean-up activities at fire scene.Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls by driving assigned automotive equipment or fire apparatus to the required location.Administers emergency aid and assists in emergency incidents.Performs basic fire prevention, inspection, and code enforcement duties, including life safety inspections.Performs support and maintenance activities such as servicing fire hydrants, fire equipment and repairs.Keeps abreast of current firefighting methods and operations and departmental policies and procedures, which may include but not limited to fire procedural manuals involving fire codes and emergency response guide (ERG).Conducts public education and information activities including assisting in the preparation and dissemination of informational materials and making presentations.Performs fire apparatus or other fire related equipment repair and maintenance. Typical QualificationsVolunteers appointed to this position shall be a minimum of 21 years of at time of appointment. Education and/or ExperienceHigh School graduation or equivalent or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.License or Certification: Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Out-of-state hires will be given appropriate time to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license. A valid license must be maintained throughout the length of tenure with the department.Must possess a valid National Registry and/or California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License or valid California Paramedic License issued through ICEMA. A valid certification must be maintained throughout the tenure with the department.Must possess a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Card. A valid certification must be maintained throughout the tenure with the department. Firefighter shall be evaluated at the one-year mark through an appraisal process to determine their suitability and capabilities to perform the full ranges as described in this classification. A firefighter who does not successfully complete their probation period may have their probation extended or could be separated from the department. Annual Evaluation: On or near the appoint anniversary date of the volunteer firefighters shall be evaluated by their immediate supervisor to identify areas the firefighter excels at or needs improvement in. All firefighter shall complete an annual skills evaluation to ensure that volunteers appointed to this classification for perform the essential functions of this position.
