Position Summary
The Part‑Time Firefighter supports the mission of the Town of Mount Olive Fire Department by performing fire suppression, hazard mitigation, emergency medical response, and rescue operations in a safe, ethical, and professional manner. This position is responsible for participating in emergency operations, attending mandatory training, maintaining equipment and facilities, and upholding the highest standards of public service.
Part‑time firefighters play a vital role in supplementing the Town’s full‑time fire personnel and ensuring adequate emergency coverage. Applicants who maintain full‑time employment elsewhere are required to submit a current work schedule or shift calendar as part of the application processThis allows the Town to confirm that the applicant’s availability aligns with operational staffing needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Participate in fire suppression activities, fire prevention operations, emergency medical services, rescue operations, and required training.
- Respond to fire, medical, rescue, and other emergency incidents according to departmental protocols.
- Conduct and document pre‑incident surveys and fire prevention activities.
- Perform ongoing maintenance of fire station facilities, grounds, apparatus, tools, and equipment.
- Conduct periodic apparatus inspections to ensure operational readiness.
- Safely operate fire department vehicles, equipment, and communications devices.
- Coordinate activities with full‑time, part‑time, and volunteer personnel to maintain consistency across the department.
- Represent the department in community events, educational programs, and public outreach activities.
- Participate in mandatory training sessions to maintain readiness and meet certification requirements.
- Assist with preparing and maintaining records, reports, and operational documentation.
- Perform duties during emergencies, disasters, or significant incidents as directed by command staff.
- Support the department by performing duties outside the normal scope of assignment when necessary.
- Work assigned weekday shifts and participate in weekend training sessions or public events.
- May be scheduled for weekend or 12–24‑hour shifts based on departmental needs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- This is a part‑time position; applicants must work a minimum of 16 hours per month.
- Applicants with full‑time employment must provide a current full‑time work schedule to confirm availability.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class C driver's license.
- North Carolina Firefighter Certification.
- NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 required.
- NC EMT certification preferred but not required.
- Previous firefighting or emergency response experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to uphold and demonstrate the core values, professionalism, and ethical standards of the Town of Mount Olive Fire Department.
- General knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- Familiarity with fireground operations, ICS procedures, incident safety protocols, hazardous materials awareness, and basic technical rescue skills.
- Understanding of fire behavior, firefighting tactics, emergency medical support, and inspection practices.
- Ability to operate fire apparatus, tools, and equipment under emergency conditions.
- Ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and perform effectively in high‑stress situations.
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and adapt to dynamic emergency scenarios.
- Ability to wear and operate SCBA equipment safely for extended periods.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work extended hours during major incidents or when recalled by command staff.
Physical Requirements
- Regular exertion up to 25 lbs. and occasional exertion up to 100 lbs.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to operate firefighting tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery.
- Ability to work in extreme heat, hazardous atmospheres, confined spaces, heights, and other dangerous environments.
- Exposure to smoke, chemicals, fumes, bloodborne pathogens, extreme weather, and loud environments.
- Must meet all physical and medical standards required for SCBA use and fireground activities.
