Description





The City of Longview Firefighters/Paramedics are responsible for the protection and preservation of life and property by responding to emergencies and through the performance of firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Work often requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration.

We are operating on a 48/96 shift schedule.
Fire Apprentice II Entry Pay is $61,011.13 without FLSA
FF/Paramedic is $69,341.63 - $84,116.18 without FLSA and lateral pay DOE

Minimum Requirements
Must be 18 years of age by the end of the application period.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Legal Resident.
  • Must be a High School Graduate or equivalent
  • The applicant must have certification(s) that fall into one of the following 3 categories at the time of application:
  • DSHS/NREMT Paramedic
    • NREMT certification is acceptable but must obtain DSHS certification by date of hire.
  • TCFP Basic Firefighter and DSHS Paramedic
    • IFSAC seals are acceptable but must obtain TCFP certification by date of hire.
    • NREMT certification is acceptable but must obtain DSHS certification by date of hire.

Examples of Duties:
Inspects and maintains LFD facilities, vehicles, equipment, apparatus, tools, supplies and hydrants; inspects, tests, evaluates and repairs equipment after use; notifies supervisors of equipment problems beyond the scope of authority or skills. Inspects and maintains personal protective equipment and assures that all firefighting equipment is in a state of readiness and available for immediate use. Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service, and performs fire suppression, rescue, and assists with emergency medical duties under the direction of training personnel as required to control emergency incidents; follows orders under stressful conditions, and relays orders, instructions and information on team actions. Operates emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools and equipment; assists and coordinates with law enforcement personnel and other responders; extracts victims from accident sites and hazardous situations; enters burning buildings to extinguish fires and rescue victims. Preserves property and mitigates hazards, emergency situations and hazardous materials incidents; performs salvage and clean-up activities at fire and emergency scenes. Maintains LFD station and living quarters in clean and orderly condition; operates, inspects and maintains ambulance and other fire equipment; performs minor repairs on apparatus and equipment inside and outside of facilities; orders replacement supplies as needed. Studies City geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, building locations, and special hazards of designated facilities, in order to perform duties in a fast and effective manner. Prepares and maintains departmental records; may assist with inspection of buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances. Conducts public education sessions for a wide variety of audiences; participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning and safety programs; assists with training of citizens and volunteer staff as assigned. Attend and complete classroom and field training maintaining a departmental standard for grades, attendance, and skills performance as required for successful completion of the apprentice program within the predefined course period. Attends training programs to continuously update work skills and knowledge. Performs other related duties as assigned or required

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or GED equivalent, must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age and have two years related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Texas Drivers License Class B. Certification for Firefighter from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) is required. Certifications for Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), and Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) are required.


Physical Demands/Work Environment

Work is performed outdoors and indoors at emergency incident sites, and in fire station facilities; requires strenuous physical efforts and ability to lift and move items weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds; may be exposed to environmental fumes, hazardous chemicals, communicable diseases and potential physical harm. Must be able to work during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.


Shift Duty Assignments: Firefighters work one, 48-hour shift and then are off 96 hours. Apprentice schedules will vary depending on education level. Time Off: 7.5 shifts of vacation per year, 5 holidays per year, 10 hours per month of sick time. Firefighter Pension: Firefighters participate in the local pension group. Each employee pays 15% and the City matches 19%. You are eligible to retire at 20 years of service and 55 years of age.
