Position Summary
As a Firefighter/Paramedic, you’ll train in and assist with emergency response, including firefighting, advanced pre-hospital medical care, and public safety services. You’ll play a vital role in protecting the community by responding to fires, accidents, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, and medical emergencies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Train for and assist with firefighting operations – both interior and exterior.
  • Provide advanced life support (ALS) and pre-hospital emergency medical care to the sick or injured.
  • Transport patients safely to medical facilities for continued care.
  • Assist with fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials mitigation.
  • Maintain and inspect equipment, apparatus, and station facilities.
  • Complete accurate and timely logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Participate in ongoing training and certification programs in fire and EMS services.
  • Support other operational tasks such as data entry, inventory, and communications.


Minimum Requirements
  • Valid EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) or EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I) certification is REQUIRED upon hire.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in fire science and emergency medical services or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: None required. A minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience is preferred.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license or CDL and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills and/or certifications including Firefighter certification will be required within a specified period of time. EMT-Intermediate, or EMT-Paramedic certification is required upon hire. Selected candidates with Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate are required to obtain Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic within 36 months from the last date of probationary status.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFYING FACTORS: Disqualification factors from the date of the application include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Convicted of, plead guilty to, or no contest to any felony.
  • Convicted of, plead guilty to, or no contest to a misdemeanor involving acts of moral turpitude (lying, cheating, and stealing).
  • Convicted of, plead guilty to, or no contest to a misdemeanor sex offense.
  • Convicted of, plead guilty to, or no contest to domestic assault.
  • Conviction of possession, manufacture, and/or distribution of illegal drugs, excluding possession of marijuana or any cannabis derivative.
  • Use of Cocaine, LSD, PCP, or any type of hallucinogenic drug in the last five years. (Subject to ADA guidelines).
  • Dishonorable discharge, Bad conduct/Misconduct discharge, and Other than Honorable discharges from military service. General and Uncharacterized discharges from military service will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Untruthfulness or the withholding of pertinent information during any phase of the application process (e.g. application, interview, paperwork).
  • Cheating on any examination or testing associated with the process.

This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Applicants pursuing certification as EMT-P may apply as long as the certification is obtained by September 1, 2026


  • A minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience is preferred.

  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred.

It is highly recommended that you read and are familiar with both documents prior to your scheduled orientation date. Upon successful completion of the CPAT trials, all who qualify will be invited to participate in an EMS skills assessment and a panel interview with the CFD. Once all steps of the process have been successfully completed, an eligibility list will be established.

A background investigation, pre-employment physical/drug screen, and polygraph examination are required once a conditional offer of employment has been made.
