Job Description and Duties
Come work with us in Suisun Marsh, the largest contiguous brackish water marsh in the Western U.S.! Suisun Marsh is home to a variety of wildlife species including: the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse, tule elk, western pond turtles, and a variety of waterfowl. This year we will be collecting biological data on wildlife and plant populations to support the Suisun Marsh Plan and Suisun Marsh Preservation Agreement.
Summer surveys will include small mammal trapping to monitor the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse. In the fall you will assist with elk surveys, bird surveys, and possibly work at the hunter check station for Grizzly Island Wildlife Area during pheasant, elk, and waterfowl hunts.
This a great opportunity to apply and gain varied experience with wildlife surveys in tidal and managed wetlands.

Working Conditions
Involves regularly working outside in inclement weather and harsh conditions. Areas include uneven terrain in various environments. Involves irregular hours and varying workweek schedules to accommodate field work, which may include working on weekends. Field days can be 10-12 hours long and start early in the morning. Requires tolerating mosquitos, ticks, and inclement weather (heat or rain) and walking distances over uneven and flooded terrain. Ability to work on various small watercrafts (motorized and self-propelled [kayak]). Ability to sit and use a computer keyboard several hours a day.
This position is located at the Bay Delta Region Headquarters in Fairfield, California.

Special Requirements
Requires the equivalent to completion of two years of college with a minimum of 10 semester hours in biological or chemistry sciences, OR one year of experience surveying, studying or evaluating fish and wildlife populations, data habitats or users, or working in a chemistry lab. Requires the possession of a valid driver's license and ability to operate a state vehicle with 4WD on CDFW lands. Requires the ability to operate ATVs. Wearing a Department of Fish and Wildlife uniform is required as a condition of employment while conducting field work and public work duties. Conduct field surveys as needed, which regularly involve both early morning and late evening work activities. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and be comfortable in and around tidal waters.
The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.
The selected candidate may be required to provide a copy of their Degree/Transcripts.

Experience or educational background in biological surveying, field sampling, and studying or evaluating wildlife populations and habitats. Knowledge of the identification of vegetation and wildlife species including birds, mammals, and reptiles. Organizational and competency skills to accurately collect, record, and report data, as well as to navigate to hard-to-find areas. Willingness to work irregular hours including late nights and weekends with varying workweek schedules to accommodate field work. Ability to read and operate a global positioning system (GPS) unit.
