FISH Laboratory Assistant Job Description
The FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) Laboratory Assistant supports cytogenetics testing by preparing biological samples, performing laboratory procedures, and assisting with the analysis of hybridization results. This role involves maintaining laboratory quality standards, documenting test data, and supporting pathologists and laboratory staff in routine and specialized assays.
Note: We are open to hiring candidates who may not have direct prior experience but who show enthusiasm, reliability, and a strong desire to develop new skills.
Responsibilities
· Perform laboratory procedures according to standardized protocols.
· Assist in preparing biological samples for FISH analysis.
· Use fluorescence microscopy to analyze and interpret hybridization signals.
· Ensure quality control and compliance with laboratory standards and regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP, NYDOH).
· Assist in troubleshooting technical issues related to assays and/or instrumentation.
· Verify the accuracy and integrity of samples received in the laboratory.
· Enter test requisition data into the laboratory information system, including patient demographics, physician information, and test requests.
· Monitor and document all testing performed during the shift.
· Communicate effectively with clients, pathologists, and laboratory staff.
· Maintain inventory and ensure adequate supplies are available.
· File slides, paperwork, and logs associated with patient testing.
· Clean, sterilize, and organize all workstations as needed.
· Perform routine maintenance on cytogenetic equipment as required.
· Conduct the laboratory’s quality control procedures.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the laboratory manager.
Requirements
- Associate or bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience using microscopes is preferred.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Prior healthcare or laboratory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of grammar and medical terminology required.
- Accurate typing skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be reliable, responsible, and dependable.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
