Colorado Veterans Community Living Center (VCLC) at Fitzsimons is a beautiful 180-bed, skilled nursing facility serving Colorado’s veterans. We strive to honor and respect those living in our community through companionship and person-centered care while providing a comfortable and safe place to live. At Fitzsimons, we provide long-term care and short-term rehab and have a secure memory care neighborhood. We are conveniently located on the medical campus with UC Hospital and the Aurora VA Medical Center. Fitzsimons celebrates a low 14% staff turnover rate and substantial longevity among staff.

Description of Job

The dining services unit exists to provide quality care to residents, to meet or exceed standards as prescribed by the Veterans Administration and the Colorado Department of Public Health. This work unit exists to provide full dining services for 180 nursing home residents, catering, and staff meals. Responsible for three balanced, nutritious meals daily, meet all dietary needs of all residents as per physician orders, serve meals in a timely manner, at the correct temperature, accurately maintain diet cards, within state and federal regulations. Maintains a sanitary and safe work unit

What You'll be Doing:

  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers
  • Communicates immediately and directly with the Food Service Director of any departmental concerns
  • Main kitchen sanitation to include Maintains all kitchen equipment according to set guidelines, Follows kitchen and satellite daily and weekly cleaning checklist, Cleans each piece of equipment after each use, Cleans kitchen, equipment and floors at end of each shift, Washes and sanitizes pots and pans, Washes down walls, racks, and floors in walk in refrigerators, Cleans and sanitizes all kitchen food service equipment., Collects and disposes of trash, maintains the dumpster trash area
  • Prepares all aspects of meals to food safety standards, visual appeal, and palatability for residents
  • Follows standardized recipes
  • Prepares enough of all menu items for residents
  • Prepares enough therapeutic diets in the appropriate texture and temperature
  • Monitors temperatures of the main kitchen, satellite kitchens, and other appropriate areas where food is served, and maintains a daily record.
  • Attend scheduled in-services, trainings, and meetings.
  • Trains new employees on the functions of the job.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Experience Only
Three (3) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in food service
  • ServSafe Certification
  • At least one year of food service experience working in a hospital or long-term care environment
Conditions of Employment:
  • FULL BACKGROUND CHECK: This position will have direct contact with vulnerable persons (as defined by C.R.S.27-90-111: "Direct contact" means providing face-to-face care, training, supervision, counselling, consultation, or medication assistance to vulnerable persons, regardless of the level of supervision of the department employee. "Direct contact" may include positions in which persons have access to or unsupervised time with clients or patients, including but not limited to maintenance personnel, housekeeping staff, kitchen staff, and security personnel.)
    • Full background checks include:
  • CBI & FBI fingerprint check, Colorado Court Database check, Medicare Fraud Database, TRAILS Database check.
  • This position will also provide direct care to vulnerable adults requiring a CAPS check (as defined by C.R.S. 26-3.1-101, position provides services & support care to at-risk/vulnerable adults, including case management, clergy, physical or mental health services, safety or welfare services).
  • Essential services is required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency.
  • Shift work required based on facility needs, and will be required to work overtime as a part of this position. Shift work includes weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials examples: oven cleaner, sanitizer, and bleach
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant’s prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination, and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
CDHS Selection Process Explanation
Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hrs per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a prorated basis to determine qualifications. Be sure your application specifically addresses your qualifications, experience, work products, and accomplishments as they relate to the position and minimum requirements.
