Job Summary
The City of Olathe is hiring one Fleet Maintenance Technician for our Heavy Duty / Diesel Equipment team. This position may be filled at Technician Level I, II, III, or IV, level, depending on the selected candidate’s verified experience, certifications, and overall qualifications.
Candidates who do not meet the requirements for a higher-level designation may still be considered for placement at the appropriate technician level.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
What You’ll Do
Equipment You’ll Service
Street sweepers
Pay Range: $21.75–$24.97 per hour depending on qualifications
Minimum Experience: 2 years of relevant automotive, diesel, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
Required Certification at Hire: A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Pay Range: $23.75–$26.95 per hour depending on qualifications
Minimum Experience: 3 years of relevant automotive, diesel, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
Required Certifications at Hire:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
ASE Brakes
ASE Suspension/Steering
One additional ASE or EVT certification
Pay Range: $25.50–$29.72 per hour depending on qualifications
Minimum Experience: 6 years of relevant automotive, diesel, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
Required Certifications at Hire:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
Three ASE certifications total, including:
ASE Brakes
ASE Suspension/Steering
One additional ASE certification
EVT F1 or F2, plus F3 and F4, may be required based on assignment or advanced placement level
Pay Range: $28.00–$33.20 per hour depending on qualifications
Minimum Experience: 10 years of relevant automotive, diesel, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience
Required Certifications at Hire:
A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
ASE Master Mechanic credentials
Additional EVT certifications or assignment-specific training may be required based on assignment
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record
Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire.
The City of Olathe offers a free CDL training program that can be completed during the first 6 months of employment.
Trade school or coursework in automotive or diesel technology
Hydraulic systems experience
Welding/fabrication experience
Experience with heavy-duty fleet, construction equipment, or municipal vehicles

The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.
Key Responsibilities
Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repair solutions including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electric repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
Performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles and equipment.
Performs equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours calls.
Maintains accurate and detailed records; reports on repairs performed, equipment usage and condition.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required. Hydraulic experience preferred.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required. Trade school is preferred.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required. A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.
Environmental or Physical Demands: May encounter moderate noise levels from vehicles, equipment, instruments, or ventilation systems.
