(Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.)

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will start at $36,972 annually. Applicants with ASE 'Master Automobile Technician" certification through the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence will be paid a minimum annual salary of $41,158. Proof of certification must be submitted with the Employment Application or upon request.

Incumbents in this position perform preventative maintenance duties and repair of automotive equipment and vehicles. Duties include assisting automotive mechanics and heavy equipment mechanics in complete engine, transmission, differential, brakes, clutch, hydraulic and other overhaul and repairs.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles such as changing oil, filter replacement, checking tires, checking and replacing belts and hoses, replacing vehicle lights, checking fluid levels, etc.
  • Works with all alternative fuels as they become available.
  • Washes Airport Authority fleet vehicles.
  • Performs minor welding repairs.
  • Picks up auto parts.
  • Assists Fleet Maintenance Technicians III and IV.
  • Performs other special assignments and duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicles, motorized equipment, mechanic's tools, drill press, welder, fork lift, hydraulic press, battery tester, steam cleaner, power washer, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as safety regulations, work orders, equipment maintenance and repair manuals, time cards and parts manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentage and decimals.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards and toxic/poisonous agents.
  • Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials weighing fifty (50) to one hundred (100) pounds. Requires the ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors and odor to determine condition of fluids, shapes to distinguish objects clearly, sounds to determine if equipment is operating correctly and track down malfunctions, and textures to detect wear.

Other Requirements

  • Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • A ten year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

Qualifications


Successful completion of a recognized trade school or junior college program in automotive technology. OR two years of recent full-time paid experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment and vehicles. OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must be able to operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles. Employees must furnish their own set of hand tools.

License: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points

City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
