Summary:
The Public Works - Fleet mechanic position is generally responsible for participating in the maintenance and repair of the City’s Fleet and for participating in the maintenance and repair of City's infrastructure (streets, right-of-way and storm water conveyances), wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system, and/or treatment and water distribution system. The main duties of this position will regularly be responsibility for the care, maintenance (including recall verifications) and inventory needed for the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment

Pay:
This position is a union hourly position. The pay rate is set per the contract.
Starting Range: $35.28/hr.with no Class A CDL and $35.78 with Class A CDL
Pay Rate will increase by $3/hr after the first year of employment.
The hourly pay rate will increase $3 again after the second year of employment.

Supervision Received:
Reports to the Fleet Foreman as well as other supervisory staff.
Essential Duties:
Duties include (but are not limited to): examining vehicles and determining nature and extent of damage or malfunction; review of active manufacturer recalls that pertain to City equipment and vehicles; use of hydraulic equipment; rebuilding and/or replacing parts; rewiring when needed; mend body damage and welding broken parts; problem solving.
In addition, some work in other divisions will be required- dependent upon departmental needs: use/operation of various powered maintenance equipment and hand tools; miscellaneous duties such as repairing machinery, tools and equipment, general clean up, cleaning buildings and garage bays; operate heavy equipment such as tractors, tool carrier, dump trucks, backhoe, mini-excavator, Vactor truck; backup staffing for emergency response such as removal of snow and ice; other duties as assigned to support the department.
The primary hours of this position are Monday through Friday during the day; however, extended shifts and overtime on weekends, evenings, and holidays may be required.
Requires:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent and at least two years of public works (or related) maintenance experience; and
- Valid commercial driver's license (C.D.L.) Class A with driving record in good standing as required by the City's insurance company or the ability to acquire within 1 year of employment;
- Certification (or other well documented training) in vehicle/equipment maintenance;
- Ability/experience to productively use a personal computer required (i.e. – email, file management);
- Understand, interpret, explain and apply relevant policies, procedures and regulations;
- Great communications skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public - English speaking;
- Technical competence and basic electrical skills;
- Ability to use (or learn to use) a variety of tools and equipment effectively;
- Ability to work in adverse conditions (hot, cold, wet, confined spaces, etc);
- Ability to pass an essential functions evaluation showing physical ability to accomplish the work (frequent bending, squatting, stretching, lifting, carrying, pushing & pulling heavy items over 100 pounds unassisted);
- Regular attendance - ability & willingness to work overtime and staggered shifts assignments as needed;
- Live in or relocate to an area allowing a 30 minute response time to emergency callouts;
