The Freelance SalesTrainer is responsible for the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of sales training programmes.
Their primary objective is to ensure that all participants are equipped with the skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to achieve and exceed their targets.
This role involves working closely with sales leadership, enablement teams, and other key stakeholders to create impactful training sessions tailored to the unique needs of the sales team.
The ideal candidate will have experience in adult learning principles, instructional design, and training delivery, combined with a strong understanding of the sales process and sales methodology.
A successful sales trainer will not only develop and lead training sessions but also measure the effectiveness of training and identify areas for improvement.
They will focus on driving performance through training and coaching that empowers salespeople to handle challenges, objections, and opportunities with confidence.
Duties and responsibilities
The core sales trainer responsibilities include:
- Develop and deliver a comprehensive range of training and development programmes for sales teams, including onboarding for new hires, ongoing sales skills development, and product training.
- Collaborate with sales leadership, product teams, and sales enablement managers to identify gaps in knowledge, skills, or processes, and design targeted training interventions to address those gaps.
- Design training courses and associated training material (e.g., playbooks, templates), and conduct training sessions in a variety of formats (e.g., instructor-led, virtual training, workshops, role-playing, video modules, and e-learning) to maximise engagement and knowledge retention.
- Ensure training materials are current, accurate, and reflect best practices in sales techniques and methodologies. This includes updates based on feedback, market changes, or new product offerings.
- Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with sales reps to reinforce learning and provide personalised feedback on their sales techniques, pitch delivery, and objection handling.
- Track and report on training programmes effectiveness by analysing performance data, gathering feedback, and using this information to continuously refine and improve the training programme.
- Work closely with the sales managers, and sales enablement and marketing teams to align training content with sales messaging, buyer personas, and the overall go-to-market strategy.
- Stay up-to-date on industry trends, emerging sales tools, and methodologies to continually introduce innovative training approaches.
- Provide regular reports on the progress and impact of training to sales and enablement leadership, including recommendations for ongoing development initiatives.
Required experience, skills, and attributes
- 3+ years of experience in sales training, sales enablement, or a related role within a sales organisation. Previous experience in a quota-carrying sales role, such as an SDR or AE, providing firsthand understanding of the sales challenges and opportunities faced by the sales team.
- Proven track record of designing and delivering impactful training programmes, with a deep understanding of the sales process and various sales methodologies (e.g., SPIN, Challenger, or MEDDPICC).
- Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage both small and large groups of sales professionals in training settings.
- Experience with instructional design principles, adult learning theories, and other sales training best practices, with a focus on creating engaging and effective learning experiences.
- Adept at coaching and mentoring sales professionals at various experience levels, from entry-level reps to senior account executives.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple training projects simultaneously while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
- Proficiency with sales technology tools such as CRM systems, LMS platforms, CMS, conversational intelligence, sales engagement tools, and other types of sales training software, as well as the ability to incorporate these tools into the training process.
- Data-driven mindset, with the ability to measure training programmes effectiveness and make improvements based on performance data.
Desirable experience and skills
- Experience working in a high-growth or fast-paced sales environment, with a demonstrated ability to adapt training approaches to meet changing business needs.
- Familiarity with modern sales enablement technologies, such as broader revenue intelligence platforms, digital sales rooms, or AI role-playing software, and their role in supporting sales effectiveness.
- Experience developing blended learning programmes that integrate various modalities of training delivery (e.g., classroom, virtual, self-paced, and on-the-job coaching).
